I finally got around to cutting out the frame for my 2x72" NWG (will be welded in the end though) Only have the basic frame cut out, no holes drilled yet.

My drive wheel is homemade too! (and so will my tracking)

Made of 8 layers of 5 ply 1/4" Baltic Birch (Russian Birch) welded to/bolted onto a 11" bolt that I found for about $1.50 that I put a key slot in.

What'cha think!?!?

That's what i like to see, somebody using common sense to do what you gotta do.Good work go mke

I ran a couple of wood idler wheels on my NWG for near a year. They worked fine as long as I kept the cheep bearings lubed.

Looks good, Mike. You are pretty close to my progress with mine, except mine is pretty much a clone of the kmg.

Cool! I just ordered my plans from Tracy a couple of days ago, and got my steel from a local guy. Turned out he was a hunter too, so he told me "Whatever you need, I'll hook you up." He's in the steel business, so that's great!

Did you modify the design?

I am making mine now. I am using tool bar / tool rest holders with a 45 degree cut in the opening. It was a mistake at the steel place I took, I think it will help put the tools in easier.

beochie: Good to know!
obsessis: Yes, the design is modified. It won't be your standard NWG with three wheels.

I considered making that at an angle, but I'm not going to be changing tool arms for a long long time (only going to have an 8" contact wheel until i get some income from the grinder) so I think it'll be fine just as a regular squared edge.

Let me know how yours being angled works out though.

The angled parts seem good now, the tool arm pieces fit in and out very easily....I'll try to take some pictures today or tomorrow.

I got the base, upright columns, tool bar holder, tool rest holder and tracking bar cut, measured to drill and labeled. Next up is to make the tracking assembly.

Well my contact wheels arrived today. The 4x2" wheel seems really nice, but the 8x2" is smaller than I had expected.

The 4" wheel had a bit of a radius on the corners, but I will probably square it up if it's an issue.

The 8" wheel... It's not very much of an 8x2" wheel. With the taper from the 2" down to the "face" of the wheel, it goes to about 1.5" at the very flat part. I'll sand part of it off, to give me a 7.5" wheel or something around there, and then it will be probably about 1.75" wide. Is that a major issue, if I track the belt to one side when I'm working on plunges? Here's two pictures.

Hope someone can help answer if 1.75" is an okay size, or if in the worst case scenario, I split my belts to be a little narrower.

I found those at a local hardware store but decided against them due to the 2" face not being 2".

I'm sure you can find a way to use them, it may not be the greatest but you probably paid $10 for it. I bought an 8" poly wheel.
