Hi All, here's another one fresh off the queue.

This is my "Mariner" model rigging knife:

OAL 8.3"
Blade 3.675"
1/8" O1
Safety Orange G10 (behaves like canvas micarta, tho - not sure about that story)
3/16" brass pins

This is another somewhat rough-finish knife due to ill-conceived belt-finishing experiments, so I've left it at a brushed 220 grit and loaded it up with Flitz wax. The grind is very thin at the edge, so it only spent about 5 minutes on the stone to get wicked sharp.

Good news on this one is I totally nailed the handle contours, I think. It feels perfect, and despite having exactly the same profile dimensions as the big maple-handled hunter, it fits better.
The G10 looked rather offensive as glued blocks, but once the shaping started I REALLY began to dig it.

The sheath is my standard kydex affair with a lanyard hole at the end.
This one will hopefully be going to a neighbor who will beta-test it for me on his boat next season.
I'm so happy to finally have this one done too - it's been kicking around the shop all summer.

While this isn't my best finished knife in certain ways, other elements of my execution are definitely maturing. I'm hoping the next set really comes together from both angles.

Thanks for looking.

Nice job, looks like a great user!

Glad you like it.
The blade shape is specific to shipboard use, which traditionally calls for a blunt blade for safety and weapon-perception reasosn.

I hope it goes to sea next season and gets well used.

Looks good. I reckon it would make a good kitchen slicer with the handle tweaked a bit too.

I think O1 is definitely not the greatest choice for the obvious reason, but I'm working in carbon steels right now.
The Flitz wax claims 6mo protection in wet environments, 3mo in saltwater. I don't know if that's immersion, high-humidity, spots of water, or what. In either case, we'll find out. :-)

I think if you hand sanded it up to a higher grit and forced a patina, it would hold up better. As long as it's stored dry and oiled it should be ok? I'm just repeating stuff I've read. I haven't really field tested many steels.

I love everything about that blade as I have been sailing for years and have always been drawn to that style of blade. We desparately need some rain in Central, TX so I can keep sailing as Lake Travis looks like a puddle right now but what an awesome blade !

I agree, it could use a higher finish. Some experiments in the early stages rendered that... unlikely.
Another revision would definitely get the better polish, plus the wax.

Thanks, Coltman. I hope you get some water. :-)

I like it, Daizee!! Almost like a modified wharnie, which is never a bad thing. That blade should get lots of good use. Nice job on the handle:thumbup:
