I was wondering if anyone has a source for 3/8" thick 5160 or like steel. I've got to do a few more monster bowies and I just wondered if there was a source I could order from (Kelly and Admiral only go up to 1/4") before I made the 1 1/2 to 2 hr. hike to a scrap yard for BIG leaf springs. I neer thought I'd go through what I had.

J, I have some 3/8" X 2" 1065. If your not after a huge amount I could probably part with 2 or 3 feet of it........ I got it from Pacific Machine and Tool Steel in Portland, Or. You could order from them but you'd have to buy a whole bar. Most likly over 18'.....

Thanks Ray, I appreciate it but, I need it 2 1/2" wide...Big Bowies. I'm probably going to take a trip to Harry's You Pull It on Friday. That's where I got this size last time, from a damn near new spring. I'll let you know what I find Dan.

when you go looking for steel in the scrap yards, like old leaf springs, what do u look for? how can u tell you're getting what u think u are?
there are lots of places around me I could check out, if only I knew what to look for...
any tips for starters?

TIA Steve

J. got some here if you can wait to the Hammer-In. You can make it any size you want on the press. I hope its running.

IG beat me to it
J why not take 2" and fourge the edge out to 2 1/2"? just wondering?

go to a brake/spring (truck service) outfit that makes springs
they shold have all the spec's on thier stuff.

Damn Mark, Your right. I was just looking at the paper catalog. I'll give them a call just to make sure I don't have to order 60' of it or something.

As far as 2", I could use it for one of them but, the others have lugged guards. The guard is part of the full tang, that's the part that needs to be 2 1/2" and 3/8" thick, not the blade. If it was just that the blade needed to be drawn out, it would be no sweat.

Paintfool-just go and look for clean steel. I don't take anything that looks abused and when you get it home, make a test blade. It doesn't have to be pretty just HT and beat the tar out of it. It's better to know and, at worst, go back for another than to have the blade/knife fail on a customer. The yards have some good stuff but, my biggest trouble is that everything is at least a hour away from me out here.

Good luck on the Press George. I was looking forward to watching that sucker squash steel again...gotta finish mine someday...and maybe playing with it myself some, too.

J. Don't know how close you are to a large city but look for a spring shop that makes springs for trucks. Thy will most often sell you what you need or you may find it new in their scrap pile as pieces to short to use for there springs. I get all my 5160 from a spring shop in Phoenix. Gib
