3" bladed folder cheap and tough?

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Opinels. Also, look into the Schrade SP3 Firebird. I'd bet you can get a bunch of them from WalMart for less than $15 each. Personally, my suggestion would be a bunch of Victorinox slipjoints (Tinkers, Spartans, Pioneers or Soldiers). But since they don't lock, I guess that rules out your "protection in everyday life" requirement.
Let us know what you come up with and how they like 'em.

My vote for great small, tough folders that are inexpensive always goes to SOG and their Mini Autoclips. Absolutely great small knives for around $27 from Knives Plus; mail order.

In a Crkt I would suggest would be the Apache or a Mirage of some sort. The Mirage Grey Ghost Wharncliffe is being dropped and those can be had for $15. to $20. apiece depending on who you buy them from. Those have anodized aluminum handles with bead blasted blades in AUS8. I would think that would be a pretty good choice. You get something with a half way decent blade steel. The quality on those is pretty darn good as well. It might be hard finding someone with 30 though. Hope this helps.

Just a thought, but you might want to post in the knives wanted forum. You might well find someone giving you a great deal on a slightly used knife. I would go for the Spydie Delica there.
Good luck!

In this price range, I would have to add the Gigand knives, such as the Summit, to the list. It has a very smooth action and has proven to be quite sturdy for me. Good blade, too. The newest production runs of the Gigand knives get the cryo treatment. They have a high quality look and feel, with good heft and balance. I would consider them a more flashy option to the more military look of the CRKT knives, which are also quite a great deal. Expect $22-$27 price ranges. The Gigand blades are AUS-8 vs. the AUS-6 of the CRKT models in this price range.

Cordially,

Dave

Go to www.eknifeowrks.com and search the Meyerco knives. Any of the bolt-action or lockback Zytel folders would fit the bill nicely. 440 or ATS34 steel, and very sharp, in my experience.

HI,again. SMKW has Bucklites with the old style handles from 9.99 to 12.99. They have new blades, excellent deal.
