This is an experiment to see whether I am able to make specialty one-off made to order compound curvature platens without great angst and heartburn. I wasn't going to do this because it violates my number one rule for selling on the forum which is to never put something for sale that isn't already made, and never take payment for something that isn't ready to ship. We'll see how this goes.

I am selling three compound curvature platens made to whatever geometry you wish so long as it fits within a standard thick KMG style platen blank. The one I made for myself was a 5" radius (10" diameter) with 1/4" radius on one end and 1/8" on the other.

I will need full payment in advance. The lead time to receive the custom ordered platen is 10 weeks. Except for failure to deliver on time or quality problems the payment is non-refundable. I've been here long enough that I think people understand I'm not going to runaway with anybody's money.

The finish will be as-machined, meaning there will be tool marks visible in the finish. The working surface will be finished with a new, one-time-use high-end coated carbide ball end mill with .005" step overs between paths. I don't recommend attempting to sand out the tool marks, it isn't necessary and you'd likely distort the geometry.

The cost is $200 for one hard A2 platen. This is limited to a total of three platens.

Any takers?

Hey Nathan, I'll take one as long as you can include an invoice / Bill of Sale when you ship it to me (I will pay the shipping of course).

I will take number 2 as already mentioned. I think that I will go with one to match my 72 inch diameter platen that I already own. Lets do 1/2 inch on one end and 1/8 on the other. Now if you think that you could do 72 inch on one side and 36 on the other and 1/2 inch at both ends...............:D

I can do that, no joke, though I'm not sure how well the belt would behave across the two geometries. You might not like it, particularly the 36" side. Let me work out a transitional geometry.

Also, be aware that a 1/2" radius plunge is very large. Not a problem on my end, but perhaps larger than you might envision. I recommend 1/4" or 3/8" radius for a relatively large plunge, though you can have whatever you want, no problem.

ill take one for my 10" wheel with the 1/4 and 1/8. Just like yours.

You got.

Thank you folks, these are "sold out".

I'm going to stop here and make sure these three people get what they need before biting off any more here.

If anybody else wanted one and didn't get the opportunity to, it would be very helpful if you could post your interest here on this thread so I can determine if there is enough interest for another run in the future. Also, if you'll post here I'll send you a note in the future if I run these again.

Thanks,
Nathan

We.if it will be a problem, then lets go for 72 diameter. Yow know what I plan to use it for. I think that would be the thing. As for the ends, I meant whatever you did with the bigger end of the flat ones, which may have been a 1/2 diameter wheel or 1/4 radius. If you did a 1/4 and /18 for those, then the same will do find for this one.

These finished today and will be going out for HT tomorrow.

Excellent. You said 10 weeks?

Yeah I know. It was my intent to simply run this like any another job and I'm six weeks out right now which, when you figure HT and possible hiccups, got me to 10 weeks. But folks had spent their money, so I lost my nerve and ran them other the weekend which means technically I put it in front of other jobs, but I was just going to be drinking beer anyway so why not. *shrug*

They are still out for heat treat, I'm expecting them back any time now.

Nathan, my mail server is back online as of Monday, 28th Jan., Very sorry for the trouble!
