3" folder (delica vs cali vs ??)

My Caly3 has a little bit of play, definitely visible, but according to Sal this does not hurt the lockup. It has certainly not prevented me from enjoying the Caly3 at all, as it is my EDC.

My Caly3 is also completely rock solid. Tighter lockup than my Delica. Maybe you got a less perfect one.

You cant compare the Caly 3 to a Delica.....

Get a Caly 3 in G-10 with a VG-10 handle and never look back... you wont be disappointed

Its the only spyderco i've owned that I couldn't part with!

I'll throw in a model that doesn't seem to have caught on as much -- the Scorpius. It's my EDC, when I don't want to go even lower-profile with a Lava. It's somewhat comparable to the other knives in question. One thing I like about the Scorp is that if your hand size allows, you can "choke down" on the handle to the first finger notch rather than the choil (the extended "pommel" helps), and gain an additional inch or so of blade reach. In this hold, it also feels similar to the Massad Ayoob.

But you can't go wrong with the Delica or Caly either... :)

To meet the 3" requirement and a bulletproof lock - checkout the Benchmade Mini-Presidio (BM525SBK-701) - it's limited edition, but still out there. Very high quality build, S30V blade, Axis Lock and checkered aluminum handle. It's a nice size and possible option to the Caly....

Guys....

he already BOUGHT a Caly3......:)

He has issues about the lock now

gdtrfb, if you're not sure about the knife, I'd say (since you seem to live near the factory) go there and show it to them. That way you will get a new one instantly if it really is defective. (Sending it in would work too, of course :D)

If you can't get used to the "TU only" problem, send it back to the seller and get a different model. You have to LIKE your knife; if not, you won't carry it as EDC, and that way the knife would make no sense at all.

Let us know how you decide!

Look into the Centofante 3 or 4. I like the 4 but some prefer the drop point blade of the 3.

IMHO, they are the best value for dollar from Spyderco right now. Less is more. They weigh less so you will carry them more.

They are a lot stronger than you would think based on the light weight. I have put my Cent 4 through some tough duty and it keeps asking for more.

To say that I am impressed with the Cent 4 is an understatement. I think it is a modern classic that doesn't get the press it deserves.

This is just an update:

Based on the lock description and some of the responses here it probably worked as intended. I imagine this is just a case of expectation management on MY part as I am used to military models with a really solid lockup feeling, etc.

Instead of trying to customize the scales for tip down, I elected to send this back. Given that the description was either a typo or out of date as published, the retailer (knifeworks.com) handled the situation very professionally. I've purchased from them in the past and would not hesitate to do so in the future. Most folks just complain on the internet and the world already has enough squeaky wheels so this is an unbiased recommendation for their selection, prices, and customer service.

FWIW - the knife felt great and was razor sharp. It certainly is a great option for one seeking that size knife in a tip up draw.

BTW, my Caly3 has a rock-solid lockup and zero play. But it's quite possible a bit of blade play wouldn't have an effect on the security of the lock.

gdtrfb...

You didn't say whether you got another Caly 3 or are still looking for a similar product, so...

My second "EDC" when I want something in addition to my Caly 3 is an H&K 14210. Basically the same size as the Caly 3, AXIS lock, slightly narrower handle and blade. 154CM is an excellent stainless for A 3" folder.

F&F are a half-step below the Caly 3, but it is a great user if you want the same size knife with a different lock and different ergos.

I love the Centofante 4 (also 3). It is such a slim and light knife that you can carry it anywhere. It seems to be the flag carrier of old Delica.

I think the new Delica is a great knife but there was something special about the D-3 and older models that basically built the Spyderco name. It was just a ton of knife for the money and weight. It was a case of less is more. To me, the Cent 3 and 4 most closely fill that role.

I remember back in the day when it seemed every one carried a Delica. It was a knife that was carried by non knife nuts as well as people who loved knives. I still know several people that carry a D-3. I only know one or two that carry the new D-4. It seems much less a "knife of the people".
