~ 3 inch fixed blade for XXL hands? <$150 (w sheath)

I appreciate the thought, but don't do it for me. I really need people with XXL hands to give me advice based on whether or not something works for them.
I'm not - I'm doing it because it's an unfinished project. I never got around to getting scales made for the 11 after I reshaped the handle; and I've just been moving the knife around my desk for months. I just happen to prefer hand filling handles over short and slim, if it's a knife I plan to use...if information about the outcome is useful to you (or anybody else), so much the better.

I don't have XXL hands, but the best slicer I own came off the knifemakers exchange here for <$100, handmade by Tim Johnson of Blackstone K&T:

I did a review comparing it to a few folders and small fixed blades: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...r-knives-and-a-TIMOS-handmade-knife-(feature)

Now that isn't a knife I'd beat through a log, it's really thin behind the edge, but he makes tougher stuff as well. And did I mention it was <$100? That was a sale, they won't all be priced that way, and I made my own kydex sheath for it. Lots of other makers offer similar fare.

For a budget option, I'm about to purchase a Buck Paklite Skinner - only ~$20 but has neither scales nor a decent sheath, though both can be made/purchased from a hobbiest or professional and still keep the costs low. Just an idea.

Hey raistlin65, you should be able to get the ESEE 3, handles, and sheath for around $125 with free shipping from TKC. They sell blade "blanks" (knife no handles) for under $50, plus $50 for the handles, and $25 for the sheath. You have to make sure you choose the "blank" blade not the knife with the ESEE factory handles include. I just did a build like this for an ESEE 4 a couple months back.

For the JK suggestions take a serious look at his http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1224594-Element-O1-Models . Look at the model with the 4" handle.

I am 6'4" and about 280 lbs. (was 357lbs at my peak). I wear XXL gloves, and have busted a few pairs. Standard XXL gloves are for hands with 10" circumference, mine are 11". The ESEE fits very comfortably and the handle measures a hair over 4" from guard to pommel. For me 4" and up is ideal for full size knife handles.

Hopefully that helps.

That JK Hunter looks pretty good. Budget friendly, too (I'd rather not spend $150 right now). That and the Lionsteel M2 seem the best two options (it has a 4.14" handle) to not spend all of my budget, although it sounds like the ESEE 3 could work. Maybe I should skip the ESEE 3 for now and go with the knife that everyone else DOESN'T own already (lol).

BTW: Glad that I don't have the 11" circumference issue. I have the longer, thinner fingers problem. Equally bad.

****

And thanks to everyone for the other suggestions. I think I'll make myself narrow to the JK Hunter, ESEE 3, and Lionsteel M2 and choose between them. Otherwise, you know how this goes, easy enough to go back and forth and back and forth considering all kinds of options, and never make any progress. Besides, I'm sure it won't be the last knife in this size range that I buy :D

What I can't understand is why the fixed blade manufacturers don't offer more fuller fitting scale options. Or, at least, sell some liners that are made to expand the thickness a little. They could have them made for pennies and sell them for dollars.

big hands make using a production knife an iffy thing. Most have handles too short, too thin, to, well to little. I have had to resort to having knifes made for me. Most custom knife makers will accommodate a request for a larger handle.
I just got this one from Gene Ingram. I asked for a thicker, longer handle, and boy did he deliver. D2 steel and Bocote wood. Heaven.
The pattern is his 'fixed blade sodbuster', but he calls this one the 'big guy sodbuster'.

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing for the last day. The more I research, the more I think custom is probably my best bet for a smaller knife for my hands. Best bet would be for me to save up for awhile to get what I want that I know will fit well :)

Well, today I was at Cabelas, and instead of a fixed blade, I walked out the door with the Buck 110. Just felt really good in the hand. Then I spent the rest of my budget on a Spyderco Sharpmaker from Amazon. Been wanting one of those for a while.

Looks like the smaller fixed blade will have to wait until I stumble upon one that I can try in person that seems good to me :)

Thanks for everyone's help!

Ended up getting the Battle Horse Knives Small Workhouse:

1/8" O1 tool steel
OAL- 7 1/4"
Cutting Edge- 3 1/8"

The handle on it is a little longer and a better shape for my large hands than my BK14:

At some point I still might like a knife with a bit longer (and thicker handle), but this is quite nice :)

I like the way dpx gear knives fit in my hands. End to end Thumb to pinky hand spread 10.5"". Nice looking too
