3 Inch or 4. Does Size Really Matter? If so, How?

I live & work around non knife people, so if need arisen, none of the available knife will be sharp enough to do a clean cut. As result, even I currently use 3.75" blade, I wish I had 4.5" for making sandwidch ;).

As others, beyond food use, 4" blade might not be needed. Daily office/home use (packages, strings, paper, etc.) can be cut well with 3" or less blade.

One note about handle: some tasks are done best if I can choke up on the blade & the butt of the handle rests in my palm. As such, the short blade & handle of my Sanrenmu 763 works very well.

Most often it is because I have gigantic hands and I want to be able to grip with my entire hand comfortably in the handle. Blades that are near the 4' length point tend to have enough real estate to accommodate my hands. I like the PM2 because it has more handle than is normal for slightly smaller blade length. I can get a full grip on something a little smaller, but I have to scrunch. Need just a hair over 3.5' of handle for a full grip with nothing left to either side.

You need three and a half FEET of handle for a full grip? Jesus mary and joseph, B'ye!

:p

I can get by just fine with a 3" blade, but most 3" blades are attached to handles that are too small for a good grip. I prefer the size overal of something with about 3.5" of blade.

Simply put, if you can find a reason to use a 3" blade over a 2" blade, then it shouldn't be difficult to see the merit in going from 3-4". I'm surprised to see folks questioning control in larger folders, as again, with longer blades you usually also get a longer handle.

I didn't mention it before, but at work I wear gloves almost all of the time. A bigger blade typically opens faster, easier, and safer than a short blade and that larger handle is a big benefit; smaller handles become cumbersome, slippery and sometimes dangerous in gloved hands. I need a secure grip without a lot of repositioning so that's another reason I reach for a larger knife.
