First off I found a handy little gadget for stripping the bark off roots when making cordage.
I located some Cedar root:

To remove the bark I used a tag from a dogs collar as a break. Hold the tag firmly on a solid surface and pull the root through the V :

Very quick and easy :

While making the cordage I got bit by Gnats twice so looked for some Vanilla leaf :

Pull some off, spit on it and rub it in ya hands till ya get some green juice. Rub this over any exposed skin. I stayed bite free for the rest of the hike !

No that I'm likely to be without a knife !!!!

Great stuff pit. What was the two strikes on the ferro rod from? Was it the dog tag?
(I know I shouldn't have bought the pink heart tag one :( )

Nah a proper ferro rod striker, I have tried the tag before and it didn't work.

Nice ones Pit!

As often as you travel with the dogs it might not be a bad idea to find a couple of hardened pieces of steel and put one on each of the dog collars.

my last dog had a GI dogtag with her name and my contact info. it was cheaper at the army/navy surplus store than a normal canine dog tag from the pet store.

new dog doesn't have a tag yet.

but i'm not aware of much natural material for making cordage here in the Mojave.

Excellent stuff Pitt, Now I am going to have to get a bone shaped tag for my dog. This forum is always costing me money....

Pit. Do you have a botanical name on the "vanilla leaf".
I have them too....... but it's the vanilla orchids with the high dollar bean.
I have to hand pollinate them..
Yeah. I'm a plant freak.
