3 Sisters - Custom Knife Project

Dayum! Dayum!! Dayum!!! Absolutely breathtaking!!!!
Norm are the blades hollow ground or am I just seeing an optical illusion?
I'd dearly love to be able to handle one of those just for 10 minutes if that's all I could have. That's a knife that just begs to be used!!!!  :D

Yvsa, at first I would have said they had a classic military style saber grind, but there is a very _slight_ hollow grind to the blade from the middle of the blade down, and then it swells back at the edge starting at the hardened zone, then back down to the edge. (If the hollow grind continued all the way to edge with the same proportion it would be too weak for chopping IMO.) Good eye. It is very nicely done. The edges are convex and sharp as hell.

We left the design and the implementation to Petr, with just minimal input, basing it on his first model posted here back in March. He could have lightened the blades more with a distal taper, but chose to make them this way. (I should have taken pics of the spines.) They don't feel as if the spines are 3/8" thick.

I have to say I surprised myself with these pictures, as they turned out well. Unless Ted tweaked them for me. ? :D

Ted, many thanks for posting these for us.

Norm,
Those are some stunning "Sister's"...

Could you take a couple more pics of the sheaths?? Gimme a reverse and a profile shot and maybe a couple on the belt??<~~curious about tha MOO!:)

Kudo's to the maker...That dude is an artist!!!

Is anyone else sitting here looking at those and REALLY hating the word's "broke" and "poor" and right now??

I'll be glad to do so Dave. It will give me a chance to take some of the spines and edges up as well. I was going to do so but wanted to keep it to the max of 5 pics at the time. It will just be two in this one, as Dick's #1 is on its way to him right now.

Petr is an artist for sure. He also did a karambit for at least one forumite here that was just stunning. Lucky for me we got this going in March, as I left my job from hell in April. We wanted to keep it to a max. of about 4 knives, and at the time had one forumite decline. It would have been great to do a half dozen, but would have taken Petr a lot longer than the 5 months it took for these three.

Best,

Norm

Yowza!

Looks indestructible, and comfortable in the hand too.

Sleek/nice/unique styling... that guy makes a nice knife.

Nice stuff and thanks for the look, Norm.

Thanks Norm...Petr has got me to thinking about redoing my ideas on Khuk sheaths...yea I love the quickdraws, but they are a PITA to get right

If you speak to the maker, please give him my compliments!!!

Dave,

I'm sorry I did not get one on the belt while Joe was here. Would have been the perfect opportunity today to get pics of the last two together. Just remembered later and took a couple of pics so you could see the spine and the back of the sheath on mine. Very heavy smooth leather. Not sure what weight it is, but nice stuff.

Best,

Norm

WWWWWwow!!! Holy moly. Drool. Drool. Drool.

Sweet guys. Thanks for posting.

Norm, I'd really like to know how they perform! They look like formidable choppers, and I'm sure they're as unbreakable in normal use as an AK. :)

Dan

They are breathtaking. Real works of art.

Gotta say, though, I'd probably never find out how they worked in the field. Were I to invest some serious coin in such a pretty thing, I doubt I'd have the heart to use it - or at least, to really use it with abandon. What if an edge did chip? What if I overswung and hit a rock? What if the log had a nail buried in it? The wonderful heat treat, the perfect balance to the swing would be wasted. It would stay hanging on a wall, mostly unused.

... and if I'm going to have a wallhanger, I might as well only pay for a wallhanger.

Interesting handles. How do they feel in your hand or while chopping?

Howard, they are surprisingly comfortable. Each handle was subtlely different. Mine had the thinnest waist, towards the butt cap flair, and actually was not _quite_ as comfortable as #2 to me. It was all very close and subjective. But overall #3 just appealed to me in a whole bunch of picky ways I can't even articulate. Joe finally saved my indecisive a$$ by going with #2, which is probably the most unique of the 3. They are all very much alike, but #1 and #3 share more minor attributes that only an extremely picky person would notice (ahem...:D). It took me just a bit to get used to the handle on 3, and now it feels totally natural, with my pinky circling the waist of the handle more fully.

The grooves help keep the handle in place, but the smoothness in between them keeps them comfortable. They do not feel like 3 lb. knives and that is due to the handles IMO.

I have chopped with mine just a little bit so far, but it hits with great authority, and the blade is very well balanced. The handle feels just fine, and is long enough that I can choke up or go back for different hits. I have a 25' dead birch in the front yard that needs to come down, and this guy is going to get a workout for as long as I can swing it.

Those look totally outstanding! The sheaths look really sweet too!

The weight would be too heavy for me as a worker but the overall design looks awesome. I love the flare to the butt like that.

Hi there,

I just got from my holidays and found this thread. I am glad the sisters made it safely to California.

There was one more knife made in slightly different design. One forumite asked for a khuk with finger guard. That blade has the same dimensions but does not have those holes and other special marks. It has the finger guard instead.

The guy who ordered the blade have not been responding to emails though. :(

I am glad you guys like the work that was put into those khuks. :)

Somehow, Karel, I don't think that's going to be a problem in the long run. I THINK the knife will find a home...

Thems plain beautiful. Seriously.

Has any of you chopped with one yet?

ROTFLMAO!! They recognize the triangular boxes eh?

I,m building up my arms just to be able to handle one of those bad boys . Did Yvsa call it right on the hollow grind ? Those sheaths look great as well .
