You no longer 'need' the 20" sirupati. The Gelbu at that size is both a weapon and a worker. Clear trail or?

funny..i've been wanting a 20" sirupati also.

-and it is one of your best priced, items, too. What's not to like? Simple lines, elegant, useful, and a martial artist. Sirupati.

But I've borrowed money to buy a blade from Pen for his Bro so I'm tapped till Christmas. I keep thinking I should save, bite the bullet, and find out what a 25" AK or 22" Ganga Ram will do to the pine forest around here. The two left on my list are a real big chopper and a Sirupati.

Lists have a way of growing....

Everyone needs at least one Sirupati. It is truly a beautful blade, with the brass inlay and all. I received a 20" Kumar Sirupati with horn handle this week from Uncle Bill and it is drop dead beautiful. It's a wall hanger...almost too beautiful to use. I plan to get another down the raod. I'll bet the little ones are cool looking.

Rusty and a few others are dedicated fans of the 12 inch Sirupati.

It's a good knife and when you get into the 20 inch range they will do a surprising amount of work.

Sheesh..how come I have to read the forum for six months to find out Rusty and a few others are fans of the 12" sirupati? That's a rhetorical question. Makes sense, too. Light and strong. Wonder what it feels like in the hand?

And a horn handled Kumar. That's what i want. perfect match to my hanshee.

The 12" Sirupati is cool. It is amazing what that little feller can do. More useful camping than a big, straight-bladed camp knife. Concealable. With a little practice, it is a pretty good knife to skin game with if you aren't taking pelts. Cool in the garden & kitchen. It'll take the legs off a whole mess of frogs. It may be little, but it is still a Sirupati. Y'all need to try 'em: UB needs a new pair of running shoes.

Did you guys have to modify the 12" handle so it fit your hand better?

I was going to sand or grind off one of the end pieces on mine.

Better idea:

Modify your hand. Not right to mess with the khuk. And this way you can invent some marvelous stories about your heroic efforts to fight off the (tiger, bear, woman, muggers, meter maid) to explain away the injury.

Bruise my hand swallows a 12" khuk. The little 13" 'Balance Model' I have although small gives me a very tight grip that I like on such a small knife.

The khukuri handle seems to me to be designed so that the butt cap will slide past the heel of your hand when held properly. It's a foriegn concept to us in the western world, but a little practice makes it work as it should.
Give it a try and see what happens.

It sort of works... My index finger ends up past the bolster, behind the cho. It's a secure grip but if my hand slides past the cho there may be an injury. Probably only an abrasion with my sharpening skills though.

I'll have to do more chopping to find out for sure.

hmm...sounds like if there is ever another convention we'll have to compare grip styles. I personally hold my 12 inchers with my thumb and fore finger on the sides of the blade, or thumb on the spine. Though Im a big believer that a properly matched hilt should feel comfortable in the hand. Traditionally in most places where big choppers are/were depended on we would either be able to visit the smith and choose from a variety of knives to find a good fit, or have the smith make one that fits.

I don't know 12", but cut the corners off the BAS. Removing just a little helps a lot. When chopping, the points of the buttcap stabbed my hand. I will do the same to my 15" AK. I do not have a large hand- average.

that's it. Knives you'd think youd give away come back to your hand with a little adjustment.

I don't know what prompts me to say this, but thank you for the quality product. Please consider encouraging your wife to carry on in the event of your departure from the veil of tears. The finest knives out of Nepal. The poor Kami's just go back to whatever if we are gone. No point making the best- no one in Nepal except the king can afford them.

It was a rare moment when forces came together and we had a chance to get blades with meaning. Don't forget that with whatever cynisism you may be carrying, if any. Something good is still here.
