At the surplus store thy had some norton BLAZE belts that where 3" by 132" I was so close to buying them and there was a total of 50 belts. but then i tought yes thats a way sweet deal but would i beable to make them work on my new KMG clone. I could put an extra Long tool arm on it but is it worth it. this place seams to get a lot of 132" belts in all the time so i was thinking that if i did make a long tool arm then i would be set up to use these supper cheap sweet belts. now thy are 3" wide but i figuared i could split them into a 2" and 1" belt. the 1" could be used for getting into tight places. Thanks

They're a LOT longer than your 72" belts. That would have to be one LOOOONG tool arm. If you're not interested, I know a local swordsmith who would be. PM me if you decide to pass on them but would be willing to ship them.

If you got creative you could do it. How about this, 14" idler/drive wheel, 30" centre to centre and a 30" contact wheel?

:)

Our backstand grinder uses 3x132" belts; I'm sure they're pretty common.

Uh, that should have read 3x132, like it does now. :)

I buy 132 belts all the time if I can get them for under $1 a piece. While I do not have a sander that can run them yet I plan to make another KMG clone soon and it will have two top idlers. One for 72 inch belts and one for 132.
Splitting belts is a breeze and I do it all the time, Link attached to a splitter I use.
So if I were you I would snatch up those belts and tweak your grinder with another top idler.

To split the VSM belts we use, I just make a 1" long cut through the seam tape and belt and pull the two parts apart by hand. the threads are straight enough that the two ends meet in the same place.

I also know a swordmaker interested. Even if you tripled what you payed for them, they would still be cheaper than buying new.

I found a companey that makes and sells profesional abrasive Splice tape. it comes with a glue and tape. you have to press it at 150 deg but with my press that should not be a problem. would it be worth it to cut them down to fit my 72" grinder. so one 132" would make 4 belts, 2-2" and 2-1". just a thought. or maybe i will just buy them and resell them to sword makers and buy belts that fit my grinder.

i have a friend and i gave him and old used one and it was already cut at the joint.
when he got it he took some epoxies and a peice of overalls and glued it together and put it in a press til it was dry .
it it still running just not as high a speed as my kmg.
so it can be done if you brave.
i suppose if you run it slower speed on you grinder it would be ok.
just i would want to wear a shield , hardhat
till i see for myself.

Just make a 30" wheel. You know you want to. :)

If you don't get the seam perfectly flat smooth and straight you'll have wobble and bump problems. Just my opinion that it's probably not worth the trouble.

well what makes it pricy is that you cant just order a small amount. you have to buy at least 5 rolls of tape and also 5gal of glue and a bottle of actavitor which would come to a total price of. 126-168 for 5 rolls of tape (price depends on grit and the thickness of tape ordered), 110-117 for 5 gal of glue and 30 for a bottle of actavator. so thats 266 to 315 for 500 meters of tape and glue. which would do 6560 belts if you used 3" for each belt so that would be 4 to 5 cents per belt. the onley way it would work is if a bunch of us got to gather and split up an order. then we could all have tape and glue for the whole range of grits. lets see. if each person wanted 10 yards of each grit that would make a split of 10 ways and would cost each person around 40 bucks if the total came to 400 with shipping.

I'm pretty sure I'm the sword maker referred to in this thread... we have 7 machines running 132" lengths.

Problem we have been having is all the surplus belts out there are old. On a low speed/HP machine they might run fine, but on a high tension bader 5hp they last about 5 mins before coming apart.

This is a new problem in the last year or so, before that I used surplus belts all the time. The last 3 boxes have all had bad/old joints and I just can't take it anymore. I'm going back to fresh stuff!!

I really miss the deals on J-flex we had been getting but I never find them for sale anymore.

Its nice to pay $1 for a $10 belt but now I have hundreds of belts that I cant use for anything but hand work so I'm just not saving $$$ and I'm certainly loosing time.
