I have a Makita 3 X 24" belt sander and would like to use it to finish sanding (polishing) my knives. My question is are there any belts out there with a finer grit than 120 and if so where is the best place to get them?

Croc, when I first started I tried using a woodworking hand held belt sander, too. It does not work. I've heard the same story from others. The belts available for these machines are generally only aluminum oxide, and wear out very quickly. Sorry I can't be of more help to you.

If you have a 1/4 sheet palm sander, I have seen work done with those using quality paper up to 400 grit or so, but still only as a prelude to hand sanding for a finish.

Well, I made a few with a belt sander about that size lots of years ago. What I did was mount the sander in a vise, made it so the switch was always on with some tape or such and used the plug in for the go and stop. I'm sur the knives I made were very crude, but it seemed to work pretty good at that time. I think you will have to be happy with course, medium and fine. Frank

The first two knives I did went great (1095, 440C). But I am doing one now out of A2 and MAN is that stuff hard to hand sand. Thats why I thought about trying to use my small belt sander. I guess I can get some belts for my 2 X 42 to try to do the finish work or do you guys think I should hand sand this stuff. If so these will be my last knives out of A2.
