3 Year Knife Review - The Becker BK5 Magnum Camp

I get excited when I see a post from you Survivormind. I know its going to be good.

Nice review. I'm on my second 5 now and this one will not be lent out. I like it mainly because it is big, it slices, and it's very light for its size. The same reasons basically that I like my ESEE 6 for. If I feel that my wood processing is too demanding on this knife I use an axe or hatchet. And the 5 fillets fish like it was made for them. I have never liked the sheath and with Micarta the snap barely closes. I'm not interested in sanding it down but no big deal as I am going to stuff it into a Combat Master. To be honest, I have a lot of toys and I forget about them from time to time. I got rid of my two and 16 but I'm keeping this one. Some don't care for the 5, but to each their own.

What a great review....... Thank you does not cover it but, THANK YOU!!!!!!!...... My only complaint is that I seem to be getting more credit here than I deserve....... This really is Jerry Fisk's knife..... It just happens to have my handle on it....

That Fisk knows how to design a working blade......... It ALWAYS delights me to wield a Five.....T'is a fine, fine blade and shows Jerry's genius at it's best........

Thank you.......

Ethan

You did good on the review and used it for what it is intended to be used for.
It is a variation of a knife that has been with us for 100's of years and with Uncle Ethan's handle and Kabar's quality control.
My wife and I both have and use the 5's at camp and others in camp always ends up borrowing one of ours after they see the usage.
The spine I have used to crack a few bones that I did not want to hit with my primary edge.
Just roll the car side window down, give a few licks to sharpen and you are good to go.

Awesome review, you have been a busy man! Congrats on the land, and best of luck with your projects!

I keep saying this.......Using this knife is a graduate course, at the post doctoral level, in blade design....... Speed, balance, power, utility.....YES!....

Thank you all for the kind comments! Mr. Becker and Mr. Fisk, thanks for designing such an awesome tool! I descaled and filletted a 24" striped bass with it yesterday. It's just an awesome tool. Next, I am doing a BK5 vs Johnson Adventure Blades Potbelly review....

Bladite, why did you have to show me that Blackjack? I'm going to be spending A LOT of time in corrosive environments for probably the next 15 plus years (we have a ten year circumnavigation plan) and I've been looking at stainless knives....problem is, double digits are the limit for me when buying a hard use tool.

I made some updates to my original review elaborating on Ethan and Jerry's credentials along with giving credit to iwouldhurtafly for the 550 cord idea on the sheath mod.

Ethan, would you say these same things regarding the BK15? Obviously, the design is nearly the same. How has the size and your tweener handle affected it's intended purpose? I am very much thinking of getting one...

That was a hell of a review, great read. I keep hesitating on pulling the trigger on the 5 for some reason.

Cool review man. I saw this this morning, but wanted to wait until I got home to give it a good read. It is a hell of a knife. Here's the video with Ethan, and Jerry Fisk, who designed the blade:

I recently got a 5, and got to use it for the first time. Love it: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1304237-Becker-BK5-First-Time-Using-(Photo-Heavy)

Great video. I ended up watching all five episodes, then one where Jerry explains how he masterfully operates a belt grinder.

The BK5 is my favorite knife ever.

There's not much I haven't done with mine.

Yeah the blade is (relatively) thin, but it's way tougher than it looks.

IMO it's the best compromise between a butcher knife and a short machete you'll ever see.

I agree. The 15 is a great knife too!

The BK5 is such an excellent design. It's really hard to believe Ka-bar would stop production due to low sales. I am thinking of getting another while I can.
