3 years of the Farmer

February will mark 3 years since purchasing a red Victorinox Farmer. The Farmer has done everything I've asked of it. All the tools work great. I really couldn't be more pleased. Except for the red anodizing showing some scars, it's in great shape - still tight and snappy. Unless I lose it, I can't imagine needing a replacement anytime soon.

The only downside to this three year love affair is, well, I don't see the "need" for other pocket knives. I've purchased exactly one knife since February 08 and that wasn't a pocket knife. I've even tried giving some other knives a little pocket time, but in the last three years I'd bet I've been without the Farmer maybe 10 days total. I just can't bring myself to buy another pocket knife because I know I won't use it.

The kicker is the price. I paid $14.99 (sale on amazon).

Thank you, Victorinox. The Camper was the first knife I bought for myself about 20 years ago. I've come full circle. I'd love to own a custom slipjoint, but for now my modest Farmer will keep on cutting...and turning screws and sawing and opening bottles and...

Be veeeery, veeeery careful there, Cheeseburger.

You're getting dangerously close to the realization that you don't really need a whole bunch of knives, if they are alox sak's.

Talk to the people who have carried their issue soldier for years, and never needed another pocket knife until they got infected with the knife collector virus. I heard once that a cure for the knife collector disease is to carry a sak for 4 years, and no other knives. But you have to take it one day at a time.

Easy does it. Keep repeating to yourself; there's no knife like a sak, there's no knife like a sak...

:D

Oh, how I wish I could do the same. I've got a sickness. I think it might be cured if I stopped visiting here. But then I wouldn't get to read good stories like yours and jackknife's and purple95's.

By the way, what have you used your saw for? I know the Farmer has a cult following and I've had SAKs with saws on them but rarely used them.

I bought five of those red Farmers during that amazon special. Two were for gifts. One was for carry and two are in reserve just in case my edc gets lost.

Yesterday I was putting plastic over the windows and installing blinds in our very old house. I used the blade to cut the double sided tape and to trim the plastic. I used the awl to make pilot holes for screws when installing the blinds. I used the saw to shorten one of the blinds by 1/4 inch. The Farmer is a most useful tool.

I know what you mean. I have an Alox Farmer (3 years) and I have found that my knife buying habbits have slowed down.

I've been meaning to pick up a farmer for a while now. Do they still make them in red and blue? I've only seen the sliver ones for sale lately.

Cheesburger,

Congratulations on the three year partnership with your Farmer. You have chosen your partner wisely. You would hard pressed to find a more capable knife for EDC than one of the full sized Alox Vic family or the Wenger SI.

By the way, those are not "scars" on your friend, they are charter marks proudly obtained and displayed. ;) :D If you would like to see what your knife will look like after another 23 years or so, dig around on the forum and find pics of my elderly Pioneer.

Clearly, this is one old man's opinion, (however one solidly forged in my mind over the last 26 or so years), but this family of knives is about a close as you can come to the "perfect" pocket knife.

Oh, and one additional thing.........
WE WANT PICTURES!! :D

I found one at a "Tuesday Morning" store about two years ago and it has been a constant EDC since. My kicker is $20 for a blue one:) I check for more every time I am near the store. I love the Farmer and have converted a few with its versatility.

I really want to see how it looks like! so picture please!

i'm quite the opposit... i used to be doing great for carrying a red cellidor sportsman until i bought alox soldier and farmer in red and silvers.... it actually the couse of the sickness!, they look so sleek and gorgeous and i start collecting them... now i have about 20 of them! and almost a hundred of other SAK variants!

SAK is is not a cure... its a disease of its own!...

but i got to admit, they're really FUN though... hehehe...

I'm not buying SAKs becouse of the tools... i now buying them becouse i like to addopt them all!

Yup, I know what you mean by that Farmer:p
Very often I try to put the Farmer away and get my Alox Solo or other "toolless" pocket knife to go minimalistic.
Only to put my Farmer back in my pocket.
Just yesterday I wanted to fix a door on a cupboard. Reached in my pocket only to find my Opinel.
Had to go to my bag where I put my Farmer.:grumpy:
Sooooo Opinel in the bag and Farmer back in my pocket.
Where it belongs anyway:D

You are indeed wise. :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

My daily carry has been a Farmer and Executive combo for the last couple years. I try a different knife now and then, but The Combo is what you'll find in my pocket 360 days out of the year. The Farmer has simply ruined my knife collecting.

Here she is, scars and all:

I've carried mine for three years and it still looks like new. It's stayed this way because I carry it in a pocket organizer (wife-made) that goes in my front pocket. I can retrieve the knife and return it just by reaching in my pocket. It's always upright and in the exact same place. Anyway, because of my method of carry, my Farmer still looks new after three years of daily carry. Eventually I'll drop it and it will get its first scratch. When this happens, I will cry like a little girl. I'm not sure why, though, because yours looks a whole lot cooler than mine.:)

Great looking Farmer Cheeseburger -- scars and all.

The little brown truck dropped off my new Farmer today. Already took a picture of it. Here it is.

This is my first Farmer. I hope I'll like it as much as some of you guys seem to like yours.

Ed, speaking as one "youth challenged" person to another (;)), I think you're gonna love it. I carry mine every day and its pretty much kicked out all the other "main" carry knives from my pocket. It's just so darn versatile, and its built like a tank. The awl makes a great scraper for cleaning out under fingernails. And if you've got trees or shrubs on your property the saw will amaze you with its capabilities.

I still carry a smaller knife in my watch pocket - Peanut, SBJ, or GEC #25 - 'cause I like the natural handles, swedges, and carbon steel of traditional slippies. The Farmer gets most of the use outdoors; the slippies for indoors and the "handling, admiring, and aesthetic beauty" that's so much a part of our knifeknuttedness.

Cheeseburger, that's a fine looking red Farmer! As Dan said, those are character marks ..... to be worn proudly!

in 2-3 more years, those what you called scar would even be more manly!...

thanka for posting the pic cheeseburger...

Cheesburger,

Nice pics. Thanks for posting.

That's a good looking knife. I enjoy images of well used and cared for knives so much more than those of brand new ones.
