3 years of the Farmer

Thanks for sharing the pics, it looks excellent a little beat up.

I'm in the same boat as you, though I only bought my farmer last december, its always in my pocket and my primary knife. The funny bit about that is that I never paid any attetion to SAK's for the most part, picked up a farmer for a christmas gift and I kept finding myself pulling it out of the box and admiring it, I had to go back and get one for myself. these things really are little tanks.

i had planned on buying the alox soldier because i do not see a need of the saw. but i'm sure, like my leatherman, you never know you need it, till you got it, then you cant not have it.

what do you guys use your saw on?

The obvious answer is "wood" and it does get used on wood when outdoors. At home, though, while it still gets used on wood during certain projects, it also works well on wall board and plastic pipe.

Back to the outdoors, the saw dust lights easily with a ferro rod.

For me the saw is probably the least used tool on my farmer, although it has seen use. Mainily when I'm cleaning up around the yard cutting small shrubs back and things like that. One of the most memorable times was when I was visting some family and took my nephews for a walk in the woods (to search for owel tracks in the trails? haha). Anyhow we spent a few hours and I made them some shelters (forts), probably the most excited i've ever seen them. The saw got a lot of use that day, and like you said, its those times when you cant not have it.

I've got quite a few trees, bushes, and shrubs on my property - some of them newly planted and in need of pruning and shaping. I don't always have a pruner on me, but I do always have the Farmer. Also, quite a few unwanted woody type plants tend to creep up in the landscaping and the saw just works better than a knife blade for cutting them off at ground level, or better yet, a little bit underground.

There's another advantage to using a Farmer instead of a Soldier. Because the Farmer is a tad thicker than the very thin Soldier, the Farmer actually allows for a better grip, IMHO.

My Farmer is my outdoor pocket knife and the saw is mainly used to cut wood. For camp fire for example or making sticks.

Nearly the same setup here only I carry a classic instead of the executive. The Farmer is pretty awesome. The most useful knife I've found for work. The only time I don't edc it is when I don't want the bulk in my pocket and wear my Izula on my belt instead.

I completely understand, hence the lanyard. When my Farmer hangs into the pocket from the lanyard, the lanyard hangs outside the pocket, suspending the knife instead of allowing it to reach the bottom. Instead of ending up with a moving lump in my pocket, it becomes almost weightless and nearly imperceptible. Highly effective.

Buzzbait,
That's a cool setup. I wish I knew how to tie a lanyard into that pattern.

Although my current Victorinox EDC is a combo of a Spirit S and a black Executive, if I decide not to carry the Spirit, I will carry my alox Soldier. I am now considering a Farmer in lieu of the Soldier, esp. since the alox Soldier is no longer being made. Plus, those Vic saws are great. I don't use them often, but when they're needed, they can be amazing for their size.

I think the Farmer would be a perfect companion to my Executive. Those two would seem to have all the main bases covered.
