30" Ang Khola

Well, kinda sorta sometimes....if a second buyer gets a khuk that has been used and tested, they will have some assurance of quality. We've had endless threads on testing the khuks when you get them- to make sure they are OK.

Mine was unused with the grease still on the blade. I have no doubt that it is quality. Still doesn't stop the feeling of buyers remorse that I now have. The knife had problems right from the start, such as a completely useless edge that needed to be ground on a belt sander- I sent it to Daniel Koster and just recently got it back. I have cut a few branches with it, but havent had a chance to really try it out, because the butt plate is sharp and digs into my hand. It still needs to be modified, and now you add the fact that if it turns out to be faulty in some critical way, I am just out of luck.

I now have the urge to rid myself of this knife, even though I will lose quite a bit of money doing so.

I have a few second hand khuks. I'm not worried about them. I'm not worried about the ones I gave as gifts either, and I didn't know the policy one way or another when I gave. (If you buy to give as a gift the giftee has the warranty- Yangdu)

The khuks I've modified to fit are usually my favorites. Buttcap points have nothing to do with first or second hand purchase. You knew the handle fit when you sent the blade out to be sharpened, didn't you? And they are very easy to 'de-point'. That blade might become one of your favorites. I sure would give it a chance.

WOW!
My thanks to all who replied to my question!

I definitely have lots to learn about the khukri world and HI, but you guys are speeding up my education! :D

Best regards,
Mike

Pause for reality check:

America is still a wonderful nation and Western civilization has much to be proud of despite criticism. HI makes the finest khukuris in the world and new models and much hoped for changes have recently been implemented. 2006 should be a hogwallow of khuk love, the best you've ever seen at the best prices.

Yangdu (as would Bill) sometimes sells at blow out prices at Deal of Day. Usually, these have minor cosmetic problems, sheath flaws, or are overstock.
Getting an HI blade from a DOD is a good thing, getting one from the Store site is a good thing, and getting one second hand is a good thing.

indeed. i've loved and been buying various kukris and bolos and ... for years (10-15?) now. have only recently ventured into the HI realm, and missed all the xmas bargains (dang), so when i saw a kobra on the for-sale forum and jumped on it. it's basically "as new", and is well made as all get out (except for that butt handle twist - reason for sale? :P). apparently i'm SOL on the warranty, but ya know? the price was good, quality is good, and if i can't live with that twist, i can maybe reshape the handle end or gift it to someone, and get other blades - isn't that how y'all do it? :) it's not like it's a busse with a crazy expensive price - think about how many HIs you can buy for the cost of a battle mistress or sword and then not mind using it hard and for a long time.

speaking of reshaping and handles and all that - what is the preferred method to properly remove (unsolder?) the butt caps without destroying them, or the tang? it looks brazed/soldered on, but i don't know to what, or is that simply glue holding it there? i understand that much of the wood of the handle is glued on (with the famous h-epoxy). i have an older kukri that needs a cracked handle fixed, and might as well attempt a reshape on my "new" kobra. then of course, there's a tanto to fix :> heh.

I remember Seth Murdoc always had lots of big AK's. I know he had a 30". I bought a 26.5" chiruwa AK, but at an overweight 73 oz. is is just too heavy. Even the 20" AK is a handful. The chiruwa is cool, and I have no doubt is _totally_ indestructible, but Sher classicly overbuilt it. It should weigh about 45 - 50 oz. IMO, and that extra couple of pounds really does make a difference. Holding it two-handed though, I can tell you that what it hits it goes through!

I also have a 25" 58 oz. Father AK, and that is about as high as I care to go. I was going to say that there is no use getting something you couldn't use, but that's not true. I have a fun 50" 154 oz. Buff head ceremonial from another company bought on a second hand deal, and it is fun to play with and compare to usable sized knives.

So we're talking 30" and 80 oz. here. This is really a two-hander for sure. Looks like it is in excellent shape though.

Bladite, try doing a search for "handle removal" or check the Tips and tricks sticky.
The long and short of it is, you grind the peened tand down flush. On a Kobra USUALLY the center peen is the one that goes all the way through. The others are for decoration. SO just grind that one down. Heat the blade up in some hot water. This will melt the laha (natural epoxy). You should then be able to pry off the buttcap. Be careful, though. The kobra's faux tangs are pretty much nailed on, i believe. If this is the case, then you might need to grind their peen off as well to get the buttcap off. Once you get the cap off, keep the heat going. Once the laha starts to flow around the now exposed tang, QUICKLY turn and jerk the handle off. Careful, that stuff sets up fast:) Anyway, just do a search on it. it's not too bad;)

If any of you guys are interested in buying this 30" Ang Khola, please do so.

I will step aside for anyone who wants it - paying off a gun purchase...
(Got in a bit of trouble with the woman because I still have to pay off the gun purchase... No more spending sprees for this guy until I first pay off what I already bought...)

Regards,
Mike

So why did you post this here if you still had to make gun payments? And you posted the same thread in several other forums, trying to get as many people to see it as possible? Obviously, if you just wanted to know about the khuk, you would've just made one post and put it up here. Khuks are specialized, and basically the only people who are knowledgeable about it are spending most of their time here.

And now you're encouraging other people to bid on it?

Sorry, no free advertising.

This smells like spam. Should a mod delete this link? Spark has prohibited even linking from here to the stuff on sale in the trade.

You're right, Eric. Thank you. The thread has much generalized discussion about large AK's, and I really don't want to injure it. I think you're pointing it out is beautiful Karma.

Hey Rat, Ill take that movie model from you if you want to sell it.
I dont need no stinking warantee...

Per Yandu, an HI Warranty remains fully in place if the Khukuri is sold new/unused. No surprise. I can see how a "used" one shouldn't be under warrantee since it was devalued at time of last sale. Thank you Yangu for being reasonable as always.

Eric_425,
I can see how it may seem like spam, but let me make some clarifying comments here:

1) When I originally made the post, I had the ‘green light’ from my lady to go ahead and make some additional knife purchases. (If you need to know, she recently spent some small $s on clothing purchases so it seemed fair.) Only a short time LATER during a conversation, I mentioned that I still needed to cover the cost of a gun purchase I just made. THAT is when the trouble began and I had to back off from the purchase of the Ang Khola.

2) To be perfectly blunt, I don’t usually spend a lot of time on BladeForums. I spend most of my time on KnifeForums or USN. However, since the HI forums on BladeForums seem to attract the most knowledgeable people on khukris, I wanted to make a post not only on KnifeForums that has their “Khukri Cantina” which has its own audience and followers, but also on BladeForums where Yangdu posts excellent HI deals and information.
Also, I didn’t want to make the assumption that everyone out there in the cutlery world visits BOTH KnifeForums and BladeForums. To get the most information I could on the subject, I wanted to cover BOTH forums. That is why I placed the posts on both forums.

If the moderators feel that I did something incorrect for these forums, then I welcome any correction, thread lock, deletion or anything else they deem appropriate.

In the meantime, I’m going to copy/paste all the excellent information I’ve learned here to a Word file and save it for future reference, just in case this thread is deleted.

Thank you and regards,
Mike
