$30 Buck compared to other higher priced knives

I'm new to the forum and looking for a deer hunting knife. Was wondering how a $30 Buck would perform (mainly staying sharp) to some other knives that sell for around a $100?

Also since lurking I see that the Spyderco sharpmaker would be the best all around sharpener? True?

A $30 Buck 110 would do nicely as a deer hunting knife. :D

Then again, a lot of knives would too....But can't beat the tradition and longevity of the 110, IMO.

Depends on the model, but if its bucks 420hc and has a decent geometry (for instance the 110 or 112 like ono724 mentioned) it can be reasonably close. Buck does and amazingly good job on their heat treat process, and it really does show. Another budget company to look for is and Kershaw with their 14c28 steel, it holds an edge better than Bucks 420HC but is similarly priced in some of their knives.

There is no knife with quite the same feel as a 110 though, heck of a good knife.

Buck makes a frn 110 like knife that i like, and the sharpmaker will work fine.

I guess I'm in the minority, I dont like the 110. Looked/felt like a cheap knife to me, no pocket clip, too heavy, etc. I know it's a "traditional" style blade and that's probably why I don't like it. I'm sure it's a great knife, just not to me.

I too don't care much for the 110, but I do really like the 112. It just fits me like a glove. Never thought of the 110 as feeling cheap though. I always thought they were a very solid knife at an almost rediculous price...

To the OP, you are going to have to give more specifics to the 100 dollar knife you have in mind, for us to give a fair comparison. Just because a knife costs more, doesn't always mean its that much better. I would bet though that the 110 Buck has worked over more game than a lot of other knives combined. The other plus for the Buck is that they are a family owned company that really cares about the customer, and they stand behind their products. There are countless testimonials to Bucks customer service.

Spend the 30 dollars and make your own decision, after you have used it. You may be surprised at how well it performs. If you don't like it, you are not out much.

If you're willing to spend a looong time sharpening initially I think the best bang for the buck goes to Queen knives, D2 steel will hold an edge for AGES and all their work is real quality. The issue with D2 is though that its a pain to sharpen and none of queen's knives come sharp. This is the same for many of the other steels that have great wear resistance; it'll hold an edge forever but it'll also take a week to sharpen. Me personally I prefer balanced steels much like 420hc, 12c27, Boker's 440c and various high-carbon steels.

generally, speaking, not bad, nothing special, sexy handles and we all know sex sells

You would be better off with an Ontario Rat 1. They retail for $25.00 to $30.00, and will last you forever.

Ive heard a guy say... once he got a Kershaw Skyline, the stopped EDCing his Chriss Reeve Sebenza 21... i have both of these knives.. and although the skyline is awsome, and a GREAT knife for $25 or $30 ... in my opinion i'd rather EDC the Sebenza 21!

You are on a board of knife nuts. Everyone has their favorites and that is what they are naturally likely to recommend. Personally I favor Busse Combat. However, everyone here started somewhere other than where he is now, knifewise. I can remember when I bought a Cold Steel Clipmate and thought I had the ultimate!

The Buck 110 is a perfectly good place to start, and you may find that it is all you ever want or need.

The 110 is a good knife as has been said, been around forever now.

It's makes for a good user blade, kinda heavy for what it is, but it comes with a belt sheath.

I had like 4 or 5 of them over the years.

You might want to consider the 110 Ecolite (or the 112 Ecolite). Same blade geometries and steels, but considerably lighter
weight - but just as durable. The handles/scales are also a little better shape-wise, to me (slight indentations for your fingers
gripping the handle).. My 112 Ecolite is my edc for the past month or so. About $25 on Amazon.

I really like the 112. for me, it's a better size than the 110. I've been wanting to check out the Ecolites, I think I can afford $25 :D

Do you, or anyone know if the newer 110/112 come with pocket clips?
