I don't know who will get it for sure. Some male in my wife's family. They aren't knuts but they are certainly comfortable with and around knives and would/do carry one.

What would you get? I was thinking Leek all the way but it is a little too much. Suggestions?

The method, for those curious: I don't know what this is called but my in laws do the thing where every person (split between male/female) supplies one gift. Random numbers are drawn and you work through the list. Each person can elect to open a gift or steal a gift from somebody that already went. If your gift is stolen you then open a new one. You obviously want to go last as you get choice.

Definitely a good choice.

However, for the ops scenario, I nice SAK might be a better more general choice, considering he has no idea who might get it.

Good point. Lots of SAKs that fall in that price range and more "friendly."

Good call. Maybe a Vic Climber? It's not too thick/heavy and has a good selection of tools.

Don't worry about it being friendly. Not an issue with this crowd. As long as it isn't something like a Spyderco Civilian it'll be fine. :)

The Leek is too much because I couldn't find it for $35 or less shipped. If I just don't know where to look, aware me.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that made in the USA is practically a requirement. No China for sure. I have a Tenacious, I know it is a great knife for the money.

I'm liking the kabar dozier...even though it's Taiwan or that JYD

If you're patient with the auctions, you can pretty easily get a Leek for $30-35 shipped on eBay. Check out Amazon, too, since they typically have the standard Leek for $35 or less and offer free shipping on $25+ orders.

I'd recommend an alox SAK. IMHO a much more tasteful design and a lot more people-friendly than 'tactical' knives like the Tenacious or RAT-1. Everyone should have a good SAK.

for 30 bucks as a gift knife I suggest th Byrd caracara 2 in G10 scales all the way. nice, function, cheap yet reminds me a lot of my Police and in some ways is better with the way the jimping and design lets you carry left or right with tip or or down config. Great little knife which goes un-noticed. I gave one as a gift, my buddy was very happy and satisfied about it. Oh yeah, it was sharp enuf to shave right out of the box and the blade design is much better then the caracara1.

SMATCHET :D J/K

i had almost the identical situation - needed $30 U.S. made knife for male on wife's side.

i went to WM to find the Kershaw Storm i had bought (last time) for 30bux. they didn't have it. i found a $35 Kershaw, but ended up with a (U.S. made) Buck. oblong hole in blade, with "kicker" on spine, nice natural scales, hollow ground, attractive, 20Bux. it doesn't open quite as easily as i'd like, but it's a U.S. made, $20 folder. i'm happy with it (as a gift).

Spyderco Persistence

Spyderco Tenacious

SAK Alox Pioneer

Depends on what the person really likes. The Spyderco has more of a (dreaded word) tactical look to it where a SAK is a bit more traditional. As huge of a Spyderco fan as I am if I had only 30 and could only have 1, I would probably go with the SAK.

Hard to beat a SAK. Many models under $30. Maybe one of the sets that combines a SAK and flashlight or some other useful tool. Several of those under $30 if you look.
