I had to do some work in a coach store in the mall, for anyone who doesnt know, they sell handbags & purses.when i was done,i flipped some of the price tags over.the average handbag was $400,many were &600,& many were $1200.& dont forget sales tax, either.i couldnt believe how much these things were.if women are blowing this kind of cash on this, then why not 500.00+ for a custom knife? & i bet you can get more of your money back on a custom knife than a handbag that might not be in style a year of two down the road !& Now that you read this, please,no more "is a sebenza worth it" talk, either.

when I got my Fallkniven A1 as a birthday gift everyone (except few) were making jokes on how much money was "madly" spent.
But guess what, wherever I go (camping, hiking etc.) i take my A1 with me and in every of those occasions there was a need for a kitchen knife, skinner (it can be done), cleaver etc.
Even the biggest jokers now and then ask if I could borrow them my knife. Go figure.

Now I'm on the market for a custom forged knife.

p.s. I don't look at custom knives as a cost. I look at them as an investment.

Nor really sure what the point of your post is. That there are costly items other than knives? That people who complain about Sebenza's turn around and buy Coach purses?

I for one, got quite a bit out of this post. My wife has coach bags and I had no idea they cost that much. If/when the day comes where one of my knife purchases gets questioned... BLAMO!

I think what Goldie is trying to say is that if it's okay for women to blow $300 to $1200 on a purse, then it should be okay for men to spend the same on knives without having to feel guilty. Can't say I disagree. I use this exact same logic to rationalize my knife budget vs. my wife's purse budget. The items seem to fill similar niches in their respective genders' scheme of things. Shoes too. Chicks spend a TON of money on shoes. ;)

When you think about it, you can find a Coach store in just about any mall nowadays. Pretty much all they sell is $300+ purses. They must sell a TON of those things to support that kind of retail infrastructure. (I know my wife is doing her part) Looks like men have some catching up to do!

I know how much Coach etc. bags cost, because my wife drags me and my son along when she buys the silly things. I never say a peep. Because if I did, and she found out how much it cost to fill up one of my knife rolls, my goose would be cooked!

Ah ok. Well, I must be lucky then cuz my wife doesn't have expensive tastes and she doesn't really concern herself with my knife purchases!

Haha, I WISH 300-1200$ for a knife was OK by my standards. :D

I'd love to have that kind of cash to spend on toys...

There are different levels of everything from pens, tools, watches, purses and knives.
My wife has a couple of Coach bags and although they were not cheap they are made to last and are very high quality. One she has had and used for over 8years.

You only cry once when you buy the best.

Just cause we're into knives, doesn't mean other people can't be into other things that seem to cost alot to the person who's not "into it". I'm sure all of us have something that we bought on the cheap, whether it be a tool, computer, TV, Stereo, or even car. It just depends on what one's hobbies are. I can't criticize my wife for blowing that sort of cash on a purse, when I easily spend double on guns and knives, most of which are redundant and honestly are overkill for what I use them for.

Now, women will usually buy fewer handbags than the knifehounds here buy knives.

Interesting question: would you be ok with an arrangement with wifey that allows you to buy a top quality knife when AND ONLY WHEN she buys a handbag?

:D if you think thats bad, check the prices on the LV bags that are in season. those prices you saw, are for bags that are two years past their runway debut.

My personal view is that, GENERALLY most women function on percieved value. there has never been a $1000 dollar purse worth the money, but because it costs $1000 they see the value in that. They will never see the value of your Case Peanut and therfore even it COSTS too much.

Purses for Knives is a loosing venture.

I still get shit from my GF from my $1100 Smith and Wesson 629 Stealth Hunter purchase... I have yet to make up the cost to her in jewelry, shoes, and purses

Everyone has their toys

EDIT: mostly because I don't hunt...

Everyone goes by perceived value. You will never see the value in her purse, she will never see the value in your knife, while you each find the value in your own choices. One thinks the other could get by at a tenth the price, or to do without it completely.

And whether or not a $1200 purse is considered 'worth it' among a group of purse enthusiasts has no bearing on whether or not a Sebenza, XM-18, custim, etc is 'worth it' among a group of knife enthusiasts.

There are a variety of products at a variety of prices because we all have our own perceptions of value.

Totally, totally wrong analogies guys. Unless you're analogizing getting a custom that is iconic to use around knife knuts, then this is the wrong analogy.

I asked my mom about the expensive purse thing at one point, when I was younger. The purse is a communicator of social status, along with other things. Projecting social status is VERY important for many women, in stores, and especially in a business. The attire of a female is scrutinized far more than on men, for better or worse. If she has a female boss or whatever... yeah. It's been shown for a woman to succeed, she has to make herself attractive- not sexy per se, but look well put together, etc. A purse is one of the big things that other women zero in on to see where they fall.

So again, relating something that you use yourself for personal pleasure as opposed to the status symbol of a purse is completely different.

Sorry guys, no perceived value in my gear. I use it.

Carrying an Iphone, lipstick, and keys in a $1000 purse in no value, that's a perception.

Where do you think I store my knives?:D

Saying that the purse is only purchased as a status symbol is a bit far, as is lumping all women into desiring social status. In either case, I commented on perception of value, not what qualities generate that value. Making you look better or making you feel good are both things we put value on.

Anyone able to do what you do, but with an Opinel, Victorinox, Buck 110, etc, would wonder what perceived value you saw in a more expensive knife, if you happen to carry more expensive ones.

My wife has more Coach and D&B purses than I can shake a stick at. A lot were purchased by me as xmas/bday presents. She doesn't care about my expensive knifes.

Both genders have their retarded addictions :D

Yep -- anytime my GF gives me lip service about a new $500 knife, I just point to one of her new Louis Vuitton, Gucci, or Coach bags in the same (or higher) price range. End of discussion. And don't get me started on the shoes!
