between King Leonidis of Sparta and a Persian invasion force under Xerxes. I will see it tomorrow.

The visual appeal is definitley there in the comercials, like high definition sepiatone. It looks overtly romanticized, though.

The History channel did a nice overview of the battle last night, an admitted tie-in to the release of the film. Pretty well done.

I've seen two newspaper reviews of the film this morning, both rather negative.
Overly loud and violent, says one. Well, two points up for me....

Anyway, I don't see this as a documentary....

I liked the movie (just don't let the hype get in the way) very entertaining with a lot of eye candy. Have Fun, to Everyone going to see it!

I saw it last night at 1215am. Fantastic film. One of my favorites. Every part of this film is great. All you guys will LOVE it. Definitely worth the money!!! Best movie I have seen since Gladiator.

A documentary? people actually think that?

I haven't seen it yet, but i plan to. To me, it seems like a good ol' swords and arrows battle movie.

it's an adaptation of a graphic novel about the battle, my understanding it's not intended to be historically accurate

the graphic novel was written by Frank Miller, the same kinda deal as Sin City

Recon, how much computer generated action was in the movie? Just about all of the previews I've seen on tv look like they are. I don't like c.g. flicks!

I just read a bunch of reviews of this film on rotten tomatoes and it has been roundly trashed by the "experts." It seems that they have taken to heart all of those aspects of the movie that I pointed out in my first post and rested their opinion of it on those aspects, alone. Even some of the positive reviews seem fairly negative in spirit. Much of what they say is true, I have to admit, but I guess I'm abstracting those elements of the movie that proved worthwhile to me and allowed my overall opinion to be formed by them. I doubt that I will see '300' a second time, but will hope for an adaptation of Stephen Pressfield's 'Gates of Fire' to be filmed. In any case, don't ever read or listen to film experts/critics and allow them to make your decision to see a film. They all have an agenda to try to appear to be, in many cases, politically correct. Listen to the folks around you, instead, as they will most likely have no socio-political agenda and will be more likely to share your values.

Just got back from the theatre. This film was dark, sureal, outrageously violent, gory, ugly, unrealistically fantastic in many respects, loud, very "loose" historically, let's see, what have I missed...?

I didn't mean to edit this post. I was trying to quote myself and hit the wrong button...oops.

Sir, the film is not terribly accurate (anyone familiar with the actual historical account of the battle depicted knows that 300 Spartans were NOT the only ones fighting the 1,000,000 Persians. They were a mere facet of the Greecian force fighting the attacking Persians. the film is based on THESE 300 Spartans. Nevertheless, the film is fantastic. As for fake stuff of computer generated action, the movie was done entirely on a computer as far as the backgrounds and scenary is concerned. But as a few other fellas here have attested, you are not paying attention to the small things when the movie kicks in. If you have seen Sin City (great film) you know Miller is incredulous and his part in this film can be seen. There are a few characters that are not humans (the immortal persian soldiers as they are called in the film) but roll with the punches and enjoy it. Its one of the best war movies, if not the best, I have seen. I thought it even was better than Gladiator and THAT was blasphemy prior to seeing this film... Check it out sir! Let me know what your thoughts are afterwards! I am already going again tomorrow with a fellow cadet who is wanting to go see it for the first time. And I am excited to see it again!

Just got back from the theatre. This film was dark, sureal, outrageously violent, gory, ugly, unrealistically fantastic in many respects, loud, very "loose" historically, let's see, what have I missed...? Oh yeah, I loved every minute of it.

It was about the spirit of sacrifice and honor and the courage of the men who laid down their lives for the ideals that formed their way of life. Many of the ideals we hold dear, as a matter of fact. I found it very soul stirring, in many places and overall, it was a very satisfying movie. The heros were truly heroic and the villains were truly despicable. Thumbs way up!

Mr. Gregory has it correct and I failed to give his post credence a minute ago.. The entire gist of the film is solely about the heroism of the 300 Spartans and the Spartan empire, wholly. Mr. Gregory is also correct when he claims that many of the ideals that they were fighting to preserve were similar to ours! I wish all Americans were as Patriotic as Spartans were. In this country it almost seems as if patriotism is something that is being washed out and placed on the backburner, if not being phased out... and THAT pisses me off to NO end!

I just read a review of 300 where the author declared that he was confident enough in his own masculinity that he realized that if he "had to stand in the presence of these men for more than ten seconds, he'd spontaneously grow a pair of ovaries."

With an endorsement like that, I just might have to go see it.:D

@reconseed

first I'm not american.
in america, i got the feeling, patriotism (and God) gets abused alot by your leaders. so blind patriotism is never a good thing. and i'm sure all how doubt nowadays, when a reall threat will show they all stick together

Looks like the slickest movie ever to me.
Its supposed to be pretty much as close an adaptation to Millers graphic novel as possible. I have read the comic and its very cool, alas I must wait a week to see it here, isolated community and such.

Saw it last night, and any reservations about backgrounds I had about it are no more. The backgrounds were beautiful! Admittedly, the gore was over the top, but then all Frank Millers comics are, and this one took that gore higher than Miller did. All in all, I loved this movie!

Go forth and tell every movie goer, that here a damn good movie can be seen!

saw it twice yesterday, once with the wife and once with friends.

it's like being slapped in the face with ten kinds of awesome.

i do historical reenactment. this was a 'comic book' movie, as it was meant to be, and one of the best movies i've seen in a long time. if you're looking for more, you'll be disappointed. i thought of it like opera: the costumes and sets are typically over the top regarding classical themes, but it gets the message across. :)

Great "movie". Go see it if you like knives, swords, battles, "Braveheart", war movies, hang out here, special effects, or have balls. It is worth the full price.
:)
I need to post the review I read....I'll go find it....be back.....
