303 Question for the gurus

Joe,

I believe the 301 switched to 3 springs in 1990, so that's two years later than for the 303.

Thanks Bert - did it lose the brass liners at that time as well, or still brass?

Not sure why I figured they'd switch both models at the same time. Seemed logical when I was thinking about it. Lol.

Appreciated! Joe

Another 303 question (or two)...

I recently acquired this Stag handled 303. What's interesting is that it has a 1992 blade but I have not found a '92 Stag 303 on the Special Projects list. It's pretty well done if it was a mod. Came in a 2006 LE box.

Another interesting pickup. A pearl with an anvil stamp, no model number, grey 'pearl' on one side and light 'pearl' on the other.

Any history or speculation on either would be appreciated.

I hope this is a little more difficult than my opening question....

Stag is a LE from that time period, I am pretty sure I have one (without looking). A few times you can find a 300 issued with a earlier blade on a later date. There making use of extra parts. Or selling end runs, or proto runs, etc. I think this one was made in good numbers.

The pearls are sort of a odd ball. You can find them in white pearl with a couple of date stamps. Especially the anvil stamp. I have never talked to Joe at the blade show about them. I was told they made a run of some black pearls and some with two different colors on each side as salesman samples/protos. Have not seen many of the blacks so they must not have gotten the thumbs up for other than a test run. I like to call darker pearls grey versions, but likely they are just variations in the white materials used. A good person on the assembly line would try to match colors but I bet were not required to. So if you twist my arm behind my back I would have to say the grey and white are the same version. But, lets keep saying they are different for the heck of it. Remember you said 'speculation". 300

I appreciate your input 300.

I can understand a blade from the year before, or even after the mfg date. That would suggest an early or late production knife like a 305 clipper I have with an '87 stamp. 14 years though I thought was a little odd.

I hope its more common in an LE or Custom Shop knife. Makes me wonder how reliable stamps are for those who are trying to collect knives from each year.

The fellow I acquired the pearl from said he was told it may have been a sales sample as well.

Thanks for the help!
