Actually David my research confirmed by Joe says 72-74 for the pile side stamp. LR = Triple r knives, google is ur friend. IMO much better than Buck. Also here r two different sheaths used by Buck for the 317

Okay, here is my opinion and this holds for the 301, 303, 305, 309, 311, and 313. Late in 1973, the powers that be decided to change the tang stamp from "Buck/Made In USA" with the model number on the pile side to "Buck/Model #/USA". However, that change didn't hit the market until 1974. In addition to the new tang stamp, knives with the old stamp continued in 1974 until the surplus blades were gone. Therefore, both stamps were on the market in 1974.

Bill, not sure why people are beating around the bush so much. You were at the 30th so im sure you know who Leroy Remer is. He was one of the best Buck ever had and I am confident CJ and Joe H would agree, so it is safe to say he would do a job as well as amyone at Buck. With that said, Ive never sent him a knife to work work on, but i would not be concerned if i did.

Your right, too many bourbons this fine Sunday. you are not who I was thinking of. anyway, Buck or LR will do a fine job getting your 317 to looking a little less used.
 
F88081AF-83D1-4E96-B272-19FB9BAE3325.jpeg I really like and collect the tang model stamp 300 series knives. I too believed that they were 1972 models. All early production being hard to date I liked thinking I was concentrating on 1972 Bucks. I have original paperwork for one of mine dating the sale to January 1973 so I assumed manufacturing 1972. Original 317 in 1973 was $24.00 plus tax.
