319DLC-1801 Benchmade Premium Plus Exclusive!

I believe they would but I think you would be limited to a shade of darker blue or black.
That's the idea, although that blue is really great and sure to be a hit, I like it and I'm not a color "blue" guy. I think black on black might make me consider getting one of these...

I think the dlc coating looks great!

The black would stay on the outer most layer, if it scraches the blue could be reviled but that make a very interesting wear over time might be kind of neat.

I just picked mine up today, so for me, I guess the price of addmission was worth it (ymmv). First impressions are very promising as well! Happy Benchmade decided to make this!

Also, as someone not well versed in traditionals/slippies, take this with a grain of salt, but my 319DLC-1801 seems to have a clear half stop.

That bottom picture is cool the way the light is hitting the swedge it looks like it isn't dlc coated.

Good looking knife. I love blue scales and have been considering a 319 for a while. If this was something other than S30V I would likely pick it up, but as it is it's not unique enough for me to drop $140 on it.

I hear ya on the price, but I was unable to resist its charms anyway. Broke down and ordered one.

Experience in this hobby has taught me to not wait too long to buy knives you like. It would be just my luck to go to order this in a month and find it sold out everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not predicting any such thing, just stating that that's usually the way my luck goes. :)

What's the matter with S30v, and what kind of tasks would you be using this for? Lol

A knife this size is usually tasked for smaller things like opening packages, food prep etc.

Also, I think the price is on par with other traditional knives. BUT, this uses a supersteel like S30v vs. traditional that use carbon steel... just sayin

I never said there was anything wrong with s30v or that it wouldn’t be up to the task for this specific knife. I said it’s not unique enough, for me, to justify the price. For $140+ I would have liked for BM to upgrade the steel from the base model. I have a lot of knives and I like variety. I don’t want to pay that much money for another s30v blade. Not saying it’s that rational, but s30v has become so saturated, particularly in BMs lineup, that it’s starting to get boring. I like trying new steel.

Also, I can get the micarta s30v version for close to $100 if I shop around. For me personally, the 319DLC-1801 would have been more compelling in a different steel. If it was different I would probably buy it. Since it’s not, I’ll probably end up passing on it and maybe grab the base 319 instead (I prefer a satin blade on a traditional, anyway).

S30V is in no way a supersteel. It's an average steel that is used to make the low-end knives of most manufacturers, and the "high end" knives from companies like Buck and Gerber.

Neither are legal in L.A. county to carry. 3 inch limit here unfortunately. Part of why I want a Mini 940 and plus it just makes sense, like the Mini Grip and others that are mini versions.

OUCH, when did this happen. I thought I knew Ca law.

Haven’t lived in LA for thirty years, but I bet I broke that law 30 times easy, unless it is really new.

Depending on what you read, people debate the "super steel" classification. I would agree with all the new steels now out, it's position has slipped, but I would be very interested in how you determined it's an average used to make "low-end knives of most manufacturers". I've looked for such data, but haven't found it. It's still used on some fairly expensive and custom knives, and is a rare find on a low end knife. Looking @ Blade HQ, paying attention to what's currently available (as their search tends to show every iteration they've ever sold, even if no longer available or still in pre-order) there are only ~140 knife models currently available with S30V. Of those, prices range from $45 to $850. Only 11 are below $100, with most being in the $115-$200ish range, obviously depending on size, other materials, etc. There are over 1400 knives currently available UNDER $100 (again, with only 11 having S30V).

As far as being average, feel free to peruse this thread: https://www.bladeforums.com/threads...ed-on-edge-retention-cutting-5-8-rope.793481/

You can see that after reading the first post, S30V is actually below average compared to other steels that are offered by the same manufacturer (in factory knives).

As for your search results, mine showed much different numbers.

In the end, if you are vehemently defending S30V, that totally your preference, and I won't tell you where to not spend your money. The "meh" reaction to S30V is not limited to this forum. If you go to their facebook and instagram, there are plenty of people asking why these "special edition" knives feature the same bland steel that the original knife had.

Can you share your numbers? I am not vehemently defending, but very curious about your claim. It's the first time I've seen such a statement made about s30v and low end knives. I have knives with several different steels, a few are S30v. Recently, I spent a decent amount of time outdoors with my kids, and used the heck out of my BM Saddle Mountain over several weekends(which is s30v)- cutting various items, making feather sticks, and so on for some bonfires. I was very pleased that at the end of it all, the blade is still very sharp, no chips, etc. I've read the above thread, and as the OP even mentions, his sample isn't a definitive proof, just his own testing experience. You can find varied results on all these steels, especially when people have their own sharpening angles, techniques, etc. So, again, please share what you're seeing on most low end knives, I think it would be good information to have.

I received one of these new Propers in the mail today. Sadly, it will be shipped back to the dealer tomorrow. The G10 is simply too slick. I mean like glass slick. I had a red G10 version out of the first run and sold it for the same reason. I loved the look of the blue on black so much I decided to try the G10 again. Sadly, still a no go for me.

I absolutely love my micarta Proper though. It's a regular carry for me. I love micarta. It provides a nice texture/feel and looks even better as it ages.

Benchmade Benchmade -

I'd respectfully ask why the G10 wasn't given at least some texture? I love the look of this knife and the fit & finish was excellent. The edge was awesome. I mean I love everything about it other than the feel of the G10.

I'd also like to make a suggestion / wish list. Make this same knife - black DLC blade Proper but instead of G10 use blue denim micarta.

I hate to hear that. I know you were really excited to get it. I'm still thinking hard on the micarta Proper.

I do think more options in micarta would be neat. Something different to marry the traditional and modern platform even more.
