.38 Special!!

About 15 minutes or so, taking it out a few times to check progress. Yeah it stunk up the house something fierce! :D

Oh dear! I'm going to have to do that on my grill side burner at the other house. For some of my knives, shiny is not the idea, you know?

I'm right there with you Alan! Not everything needs to be shiny.

Make sure you put something in the pan to hold the knife up off the hot bottom!

Literally - a #38 Special!

On reflection, don't think I'll be after one of the new run 38s. Would much have preferred a Pen configuration, that slim Clip looks lost in space....

Agreed. A 2 blade with a regular clip or wharnie would be nice. This mock up has too much resemblance to a toothpick pattern IMO.

While I am dreaming may I suggest all steel construction, rat tail bolster with stag.....

You may! If that came out, I don't think I would ever need to buy another knife again!:D:D

Wonder if a Spear could go in that frame...? An all stainless construction could work too...

It seems it might. This thread then would benefit from some comparison pictures...a #12 vogue'ing up next to a #38 (preferably whittler for the similar look).

Thanks for the posts of patina-explanation, Philllll.
When I did old Boiley, I heated the vinegar, but didn't actually percolate the knife. It looks like you got a much nicer "etch" on the steel with your method.
I'm going to have to try it!!

It's good to see the 38 pattern back but this variation isn't the right pattern for me. I'm hoping they'll cross these two knives... making a 2-blade with the same size clip blade as on the 38 whittler and a secondary straight edge blade (sheepfoot or coping) that's similar in size to the spey blade on the 38 farmer's jack.... using a catch bit so that the clip blade can be the same size and fit past the secondary blade.

Oh man, I really like that American Whittler 38 - wish I had one! Since I missed out on those I keep an eye out for any 38 that pops up. I was excited to see the 38's back on the production schedule, but will likely pass on this configuration.

I just got this the other day it's a "store" model with the S stamped on the coping tang, but it's perfect to me. My first 38, and acrylic.

Was hoping the photo would turn out nicer, but I'm using my cell, so....

Now that's a 38 Special :)

If they would offer the 38 as a Wharncliffe Whittler , I might consider it . Just can not see it as a single blade . Seems so unbalanced to me .

There are antique Wharncliffe jacks (named for the handle shape, not the blade) that are single end. The ones that I've seen have two blades on same end....I don't recall seeing one with one blade... but I wouldn't be surprised if they're out there. Single blades seem to be popular, especially with folks who are new to traditional knives and more accustomed to modern knives. I'm so accustomed to seeing them with 2 or more blades that it seems unusual to me... but unusual can be fun too.

Man threads about patterns I've never owned sure cost me a lot of money and sometimes a lot of lost sleep staying up late surfing the net trying to find them.
