Maybe some of you already know this, but you can overlay a topographical map in Google Earth, turn on "Terrain" and you will have a great looking view. It's good to merge the features of Google Earth with the power of a topographical map.

If someone has a topo map and wants me to overlay it on Google Earth I can do that for a demonstration. I'll link to the result and you can open it.

I have these views built for all the places I go hunting and camping. You can then go mark the overlay file with your stands, deer signs, places you had good hunts, etc. I also use it for planning with those that go with me.

For this forum, the reason I posted this is that it gives me a great view of what is around me. For instance I can see in one of my topos that no matter which way I may get lost there is a road within 15 miles. As long as I go in any direction consistently I'll find a road. It is good to know.

Do you have an example of one of yours that you could show us? It would be nice to look at a 3D view of a backpacking trip trail.

Thats an intresting thing to try.. I been using NG topo and i like it very much for Geocaching when i go somewhere new for a days hike. Like Strol i would also love to see how it looks and how you got to it. I didnt use Google map much my self.

I have topo maps for my GPS unit. You can view these on a computer, search for places, etc. The ones that I have cover every national park and forest in the US, quite a lot of the national monuments, and I think some of the BLM lands (don't have it here to confirm). Plus you can set way points and such, which then go to your GPS. No need to muck around with google earth.

I have those as well. Actually, all of North America. It still would be neat to sea the topo map overlaid on satellite imagery, with the ability to tilt and rotate the view.

Not meaning to steal the thread, maybe just pick it up and shake it a bit.

Hey fellow Canucks and anybody else coming up here to the cold country, free downloadable top maps can be found here.
