any body know the differenc between laminated 2g powder steel and 3g? which is tougher or has better edge retention?

I'm taking a chance that you mean SG2 not 2G. SGPS(Super Gold Powder Stainless) is made by Takefu Special Steel. SG2 is a blade steel made for Kershaw consisting of SGPS sandwiched between layers of 410 steel. 3G is a blade steel made for Fallkniven consisting of SGPS sandwiched between layers of VG-2.

The cutting surface of both blade steels is SGPS heated to 62 RC and in my experience with Kershaw JYD SG2 and the Kershaw Blur SG2 as well as the Fallkniven Model P 3G and the Fallkniven PXL is still hair popping sharp after a number of uses.

I can't attest to toughness as none of the blades has been subject to twisting or hard use.

My testing with a Fallkniven TK3 in 3G shows an edge retention right up there with D2. I love this steel, it holds a great edge.

I think the 3G should do better than D2, closer in fact to S30V .It's a very fine steel and I'll get a better idea as I use my TK-1 more often.

My tests also show that they are doing better then D2, which so far shows worse performance. About CPM S30V - both this steels are far behind and this was big surprise to me. But you may see it from the data I provided. Are any other test results available?

Thanks, Vassili.

Actually Sandvic on JYDII shows better results that SG2 on much more expensive but same JYDII Ti/SG2. I was very surprised, really. But this is what tests are for - reality check. So Takefu Special Steel vs Sandvic can not really match.

I am thinking to switch blades and have Sandvic with Titanium handle, not SG2.

Thanks, Vassili.

statmanster. that is exactly what I was looking for. thank you. it sounds to me the two steels are identical in edge retention so I will settle with the blur I just bought. no need for a falkniven in this steel. I do like falkniven though.
takefu special steel makes it. good to know thank you. I will need to look at them. I have heard others claim the 3g is super steel.

vassili, thanks for the info. what did you see as having the best edge retention for the steels you tested?

It is all in he table - SR101 which is 52100 with some special HT by Swamp Rat is best in edge retention. For stainless it is ZDP 189.

Thanks, Vassili.
