4-4 1/2" Fixed Blade for Survival/Camping/Packing

honestly, i dont really care for the handle on the RAT...I am not a huge fan of Micarta...just my personal preference. Also the RAT blades are typically taller...which makes from my experience a blade harder to do finer tasks...once again whittling and so on...cutting a bowl out of a spoon is a little harder. The tip is more blunt then pointed. So I was looking for a narrow (not talking about blade thickness) profile blade.

Based on this info, I would reccomend the Bark River Aurora. It has an extremely comfortable handle, great steel (A2) and heat treat, and convex geometry. You can pick almost any material for the scales, many options.

The Aurora is one of Bark Rivers Bushcraft style knives.

bark river BRAVO-1, I have tried many, the bark has come out best

Damn you guys!! HAHA. Now that is perfect!!! I think I have found the winner. The blade length is perfect!!! Not too short like the RC4 or too tall. Handle looks very comfortable and the finger guard looks just about right. Plus thumb serrations. I likey!!! But thing looks hard to find. And certainly with a big price tag. But I think worth it.

There is a production run of Bravo 1 due fairly soon I believe. There should be a good supply available shortly.

Fallkniven and Bark River. My two addictions. Not necessarily in that order.

EDIT: Just checked the production schedule, 400+ Bravo 1 being delivered to the dealers. Just a matter of days, or even hours now.

This thread got me thinkin.

Blade height of the RC$ is 1 1/4"
Blade height of the F1 is 1 1/16 "

I prefer the handle on the F1 over the RC4 handle

Sheath system of the RC4 is far superior to the F1

I prefer the blade profile and handle of my small G.L.Drew custom over both.

For working wood and small deft taske any would do an excellent job. I did convex the edge of my RC4which improves it'sd performance greatly.
.
I'm not real big on guards on this size knives as they get in my way during use. Since you seem to be leaning to the F1 above I can wholeheartedly recomend it.

I have not yet had any experience with Cs's San mai III. However they seem to do a very good job with their Aus8, better than most of the other companies using the same material. So whoever it is they have making their blades for them has the heat treat for that material dialed in fairly well. I have never heard anything bad about their Master Hunter.

Before you pull the trigger on anything, you might want to take a look at Blind Horse Knives. Check out the Bushcrafters and the Workhorses. Custom knives for much less than a lot of the production stuff. Want something special, just call'em.

I did a bravo 1...at least ordered it. I am currently reevaluating the RC4 as an option. I just cant ignore that warranty. Plus I am finding out more I like about RAT. I initially didnt care for he micarta handle (Based on my RC5) but now find it to not have hot spots like I get when heavy using my A1. I also like the sheath on the RC5. Initially thought too big but it is really not bad at all. The Molle back kydex for the RC4 seems to be an awesome fit for my tact vest.

The Aurora lacks a big enough finger guard nor choil (hope I am using the term right again). So I ruled it out for as I used my A1 more and adjust my grip to maneuver the knife I find I like a small choil helps with feather sticks, carving, whittling, and just plain fine detail work...something I struggle with on the A1...but my skills are new. So maybe in time I will change my views. This is why I am not crazy for the F1 at the moment.
