I went out this evening to profile out a parang from 1/4" sawblade steel.

Now I have used this cheap $20 angle grinder to profile about 30 knives from 1/8" stock and I knew she was getting tired. Well the sawblade finished her off:

I had it 2/3 done (gone through 2 cutt off disks) when the thing died. I had a Mastercraft (3 year warrenty!) on hand, that I bought when they were on sale:).

Amen for the warrantee.

I got a 'smokin' deal on a 7" grinder at Princess auto for $35.00 a while back and haven't seen them there since. Otherwise I'd probably buy another cause I just know it won't last forever... it has been good though and I use it whenever I can instead of the 4.5" grinder. but yeah, I try not to work them too hard, regardless.. Even the $300.00 + grinders we use at work will grenade if worked too hard.

Having spend a large portion of my working life as a pipe fitter abd steel fabricator, I have witnessed the death of a lot of 4 1/2" grinders, Dewalt, Skill, Makita, and Black and Decker. Smoked motors, bearings, switches and broken gears. I have a small pile of Dewalts and Black and Decker's (these two brands have many exchangeable parts) that I rob parts off of. I now own 3 of these and think they are the greatest small grinder going.

They have a 9 amp motor where the others have a 4.5. I wouldn't spend any money on anything else.

Thanks ib2v4u, that looks like a heavy duty unit - I'll look for one of those when the Mastercraft dies! Unless a 5" model would be better??

yep on the dewalt, specially if you have a service center near by.

Angle grinders, get one with a warranty. If you use them on a daily basis they ALWAYS wear out before the warranty is up.
