4-5" Fixed blade all purpose knife??

While lots of great knives have been mentioned and there are great makers here, consider the Green River knives. You can get them with or without handles (to make your own). Good carbon steel, thinner stock that makes for great slicers, and full tang.

My vote goes to the Off The Map (Brian Andrews) Bushcrafter....it's your ideal blade length and you have a choice of grinds.

ETA: Ooops, I missed the $100 requirement. Nevermind. :o

cut down an Old Hickory butcher knife to your tastes. Work from there. :)

Right, second on that

Or a Mora Clipper or Craftline. Start with something basic and proven and inexpensive until you know what you really want.

I know it's outside of your stated price parameters, but you can't go wrong with a Bark River Bravo-1 (or 2  )

Just to toss one more knife in I will say the CS Master hunter. I don't know about the new ones but I really like my older carbon V one.
Now I think I want a ESEE 4 in a big way. This is my preferred size knife.

Let me offer you my latest addition for your consideration:
Queen Cutlery Drop Point Hunter
It has a 4" blade and is made of D2 steel.
Comes with a attractive leather sheath too.

I got mine from A.G. Russell for under $70 DELIVERED!!!
I also received it in only 3 days!!!

I think the TAK1 or the Bravo 1 will fill you needs. They serve me very well. The price reflects the cost but price is only temporary thing. Also the RC 4 has a small handle compared to the TAK1 or the Bravo 1 some thing to concider if you have big hands. Good luck.

I have most of the knives recommended, but I just got another that might really fill the bill and is in your price range. Consider the new, made in america, Benchmade D2 drop point or clip point RANT. 4.5". My D2 DP RANT is as sharp as most of my BRKT. It does have a "rubber" handle, but it seems very secure and handy. $60.

Great point, TAK1 V's ESEE 4, no contest for me just based on the handle, the TAK1 has a full man sized grip !

You guys got my head spinning now, too many to choose from....

Does anyone have both the Shiv and Tak1 by chance? Id like to see these 2 side by side, I know the shiv is smaller, but has same length blade, but it seems tiny in most pictures I see, hard to tell without actually holding it.

I can see how you can get into trouble real quick with the temptation to get ALL these beauties.
