I'm back and I'm sunburned, sore and tired. But I miss it up there already! Wanted to take more pics, but here's a few.
Meadow stream with some baby golden trout darting around

Up and over the peak on the right side is where we;re headed.

A closer look

Lots of burned out trees, but they look cool

The only knives I took. (These two did EVERYTHING, and are still sharp)

About half way up the trail, looking down on Horsehoe Meadow, we're at about 10,500' here.

Almost to the top

Looking west from the rim

We're heading east, over the top. (Not straight up though!) My buddy and his wife in the pic there

More gratuitous knife shots: The NWA did it all, batoning, prying, carving and food prep, I could easily rely on this knife for everything.

The little Carter necker was great to use too. Always at hand for quick cutting like food prep and whittling. My buddy only brought a small pocketknife, so everyone was using my two knives for everything.

We hiked about 20 miles total, not including day hikes to look around. The 10 miles up was brutal. It was about 2500' elevation gain, and I could feel every foot of that elevation. Base camp is 9600'.

I'll try and put up more pics. I'm kicking myself for not taking a lot more, but when we'd go off exploring, I forgot the camera. :o

I really want to go again this year and dip my line (Season starts next month) Golden trout are beautiful to look at. (Not to mention very tasty)

great pics T:thumbup:

that is a gorgeous area.... i love that side of the sierra's..... :D that NWA knife looks like it's been working out great for you....

how many folks went on the trip...

Great pics! Philmont this summer for me should be quite awesome. Maybe even as beautiful as the Sierra's. Looks like you gave that NWA knife quite the work out!

.
Here's a few more:
The views from the top were breathtaking.

Chipmunks were our constant camp visitors

Another view of Horseshoe Meadow, usually looks much greener

Looks like a great trip Thayne. I like the look of your NWA knife with a little patina.

Glade you had fun, and thanks for sharing the pics:thumbup: :)

Four of us went. My wife and I and my buddy and his wife. My wife is not the biggest fan of backpacking, but she was awesome and had fun.

The knives saw lots of tough use for sure. I normally carry a SAK and sometimes another folder in my pocket, but I left them at home. I wanted to only rely on these, and I couldn't have been happier! I'm really liking the darkening patina too :)

WoW! Those views are amazing!
Forget about Philmont I want to take a hike over there!

Wow, what a dream ! Amazing areas to say the least.

Is it a national park, restricted etc. ? Rules ? Fishing ? Hunting ?

Any maps available ?

All those grey areas up high are rocks mixed in with trees ?

Bet you would need good ankle support........boots.

Thanks.

That's a really gorgeous place, I'm jealous. Thanks for taking and posting the pics. I'm glad to hear that those two blades handled all the chores. I'm trying hard to restrict myself to only 1-2 blades when out and about, just to get the most out of each rather than trying to play with each individual knife.

Blades look awesome. Any gear pics?

National forest, which I GREATLY prefer over nat'l park. You can hunt and fish (In season of course) have fires (below 10,500 ft) There's a feeling of more freedom and a lot less people than in the nat'l parks.

This has some great pics and info http://www.abovecalifornia.com/routes/description.php?id=33&page=1
Golden Trout Wilderness is my favorite general area. All the back country you could ever want, plus Whitney Portal if you ever want to bag the big one :D

Some of the newer gear I took along. Danner USMC hot weather boots, shemagh, REI Traverse pack, cascade cup (did all our cooking, eating and drinking in them) mosquito net (mosquitos on steroids up there!) And the best thing we've ever found for the trail, waterless washing wipes! I'll never go camping without them now.
