Hi. I've always liked the more traditional knives and got to thinking about buying a "beer drinking knife" something with a top opener. There are a ton of different ones out there and they aren't too expensive, but I wanted a little input on what would be a good one to look for. Some of the Rough Riders look pretty for the price, but I could go get a Case for a bunch more cash, or maybe a well used one.

Anyone got some input?

Well, if it´s an option for you - a Vic Soldier/Pioneer would be excately what you are looking for. I don´t know if that is your taste of knives, though.

You could also look at the 2nd hand market for an Imperial Scout Knife (or other american cutleries) and a I got a Richards, Sheffield, England Scout Knife from another kind member here. You could search the Big Auction Site.

You mentioned the Rough Rider Scout Knife which would be nice and at a good prize range.

I like the one Boker do with scales made from old beer barrels :)

Well on top of the suggestions from the fine chaps above, a Victorinox Safari Trooper comes to mind....

Happy New Year mate :) And with the Safari, you get the extra leverage of having the bottle-opener at the end of the saw-blade! :D

First welcome and awesome user name, can't go wrong with Larry McMurtry and Lonesome Dove:-)
Second I would hit up a yard sale or flea market, antique store, you can find some older carbon steel knives with nice bone scales for cheep.

The one on the bottom is early '40's Kastor/Camillus paid $5.00
The Ulster Dwight Divine & Sons 1923-1941 $25.00 ( In the Middle )
The white Ulster is my Boy Scout knife from the '80's, the rest are Vic SAK.
This is my favorite

Wow stich's Ulster is such a dandy...thats what I would have a look out for-a nice older Vintage Scout knife! There are so many out there....you must show us you pick when you decide!

I don't have a picture handy, but don't forget the Camillus US Military 4 blade. Lots of them available. Virtually indestructible.

Here's a nice Colonial Forest Master complete with ballchain Magnifyin' Glass and Compass, ya rarely find these whole in one piece.

The scales are hard black plastic the blades are stainless, the stamping is

I second that. Don't bother with the current versions, they don't compare to the older knives.

Im not a big consumer of beer so every eatch of theese only opens a few bottles a year if even that.

The woodhandled EKA is a cooperation between EKA and Wenger from the 80-90ties but I bought it just a few years ago in a pawnshop. The screws in this construktion is fakes. Just like shields in the slabs to remain of the original screwconstruktions. actually just a wenger with woodsides.
The Small Case is a very pocketable knife but the caplifter is small and neds adjustments to tecnic.
The Scoutknife is a gift from Kamagong and new for this authumn, Has yet to open a beer for me but Im sure very capable and an overall beloved knife to own.
The Alox electrican is my wedinggift from my wife the first day after our maridge and has the date on the handle. Not carry this one much since Im afraid to loose it but once in a while it do some high prestige jobs loke opening cristmas bottles.

My very first SAK a standard since 1984. Bought it when I did military service.
My Fathers Safari since about 1990. I bought it as a birthday present for him and then inherited it back 1n 1998 after he died. He had some alcohol problems so this knife doesnt realy get used to pop bear. Kind of wrong Karma for the job. It has already done its jobb so to say.

I have a bunch of Scout knives, but for opening a cold one I seem to always have a SAK in hand :D

My current favorite is the Wenger Standard Issue.
