Ok this may be going over old ground, but you are in a survival scenario and you just have your PSK and your trusty 4" ish knife.
Which one would it be a Swamprat Howling Rat,Ranger RD4,Falkniven S1 or any other of your choice ?:D

I have and really like the Javalina, as well as the Badger. The Javalina may well be my second or third choice after the S1. The original question was for one knife so I gave my opinion using that guide line. There are many excellent knives out there, and when I get my Badger Attack Tak from Busse, my opinion may change (it will be my first Busse so we shall see), but for now, I have to give the S1 the nod in this size knife.

Wow...just one 4" blade???

Of the knife I own, if I was gonna be stranded with just one 4" blade it would be this one from Gossman Knives.

1/4" thick 5160, it's about as tough as it gets.

Fallkniven S1.

If you were to give a rating out of five for each of the critical requirements for a survival blade - namely strength, edge retention, cutting ability, corrosion resistance and practicality (ie. size), I don't believe there is a knife currently in production which would outscore the S1. Sure, there may be a few that are outright stronger (Busse etc.) but these lose out on cutting ability and corrosion resistance. Knives with better cutting ability (Moras etc.) lose out badly on strength. For the requirements of wilderness survival, I feel that the S1 surpasses anything else currently in production.

CarbonV Master Hunter, mainly because I already have one. I like those Fallknivens too.
This thread addresses my favorite class of knives. There are so many nice ones out there right now.

Sorry Guys, but if I have to have a 4" I will grind my Old Hickory 5" boning knife to 4" and use that. It only cost about $8 new but I got mine from my in-laws for nothin.

Of the ones that you mentioned, I seriously doubt that anyone that has commented here has actually done any side by side testing of all them. Therefore, this thread turns into a "let me recommend what I own" type of thread and all recommendations become meaningless. :grumpy:

I have the current HRLM from the Swamp, and it is a most excellent knife that I would have no issues with in the scenario that you mentioned.Does that mean that I should recommend it over the other knives that you mentioned? I have no experience with the others, so I am not going to. If I did, what would that mean ? Pretty much nothing.

I don't mean to sound grumpy. But, I don't understand why people are so quick to make a recommendation of things that they haven't made a comparison between. Other than they bought it, so they will recommend it.

I am a huge F1 Fan myself. Although I am waiting for an Gen 1 Howler in the mail as we speak. I'll have to let you know which one I like better.

Brian I know where you are coming from but if people only have one 4-5" blade they can still comment on its performance and include any short comings, this would enable us to formulate a picture !!!

But, you are specifically asking them to make a choice. I know I am being picky about wording now. But, I don't think any of the recommendations are getting you the info you want.

You are right I was hoping for feedback on handle comfort, slicing ability cutting up campfire food etc.
For example I have a Ka-Bar D2 Spear point which I really like and holds a great edge but the false edge at the front of the blade really eats into your baton when trying to baton through wood !!!
This is the kind of info I am after !!!

On this subject does the S1 also have this problem, as on pictures it to seems to have a tapered front edge ?
