My son asked me for a bushcrafting knife for his birthday (he's 21). So I aquired 4 knives and told him that he may pick only ONE knife of his choosing...

He's a good kid, respectful of God's creations, an avid outdoorsman and is deserving of this gift.

Left to right, here we go: Matt Tacket, Fletcher Delta, Fiddleback Bushcrafter, Birch Bark Pukko by Luke Shearer

Which one would you pick...? :joyous:

Of those 4, definitely the Fletcher, but not for "bushcrafting" since he is probably American and we have trees here.
The Fletcher offers the best handle design of the 4, plus it offers extra blade length for tasks where the smaller knives wouldn't be as useful. The smaller knives would be better for skinning rabbits and whittling little sticks, i.e. bushcraft. The Fletcher would be better for carving larger sticks, splitting logs & limbs, meager chopping, digging "cat-holes" and trenches, filleting fish, sticking pigs, and it can still carve a spoon as well as the other three, all while remaining most comfortable in hand. It's features make it the preferred "woods" or "woodcraft" or "survival" or even "combat" knife of the bunch. But just for whittling, I'd take the smallest/lightest of the bunch.

those all look great, but i would go with the Luke Shearer Puukko or the Matt Tacket...

Birch Bark Pukko by Luke Shearer, the only one with a natural "bushcrafting" handle material.

Keep all four for yourself and get the kid a Mora. :D

Fiddleback Bushcrafter all the way!!! They're all great knives. Nothing against the other makers. Fiddlebacks are fully functional works of art IMHO.

I like the way you work. You keep the three you like; give him the other one. He has plenty of time left to get more.
Funny story.

I would pick the Fletcher as I have a Delta 4 and it is a work horse with excellent ergos. All very nice options to choose from. I love my Fiddlebacks and I believe that the Tackett and Luke Shearer's Pukko were the same ones I considered buying myself on the exchange.

HA! yes... something like that except my boy gets pick of the litter, Dad suffers having to own the remaining 3, what a shame yeah? ;)

Brisket, gotta tell you... that puukko Luke did is one sweet blade. So light, super comfortable in hand, carry it all day - wouldnt even know it was on your belt. Nice looking too.

Interesting quandary. I would say that like the look of the Fletcher, the blade grind on the Tackett and maybe the overall design of the Fiddleback.

I was going to say Fiddleback - just wonderful knives. However, mine is a KE Bushie, which actually looks to be closer to the Tackett.
Up close, Matt's knife looks like a nearly ideal bushcrafter to me.

Puukko for me. They're all nice but that one fits me best. Nicest looking one of the bunch too IMO.

To close to call.

I'd have to try them out to pick a favorite.

The puukko looks great, but having used Fletcher's and Fiddleback's I know how good they can be.

A very nice selection to have to choose from.

My heart wants the pukko but my applications in use require the fiddle back.

Which one did he pick?

Fletcher knife looks impractical to me. I'd go with the puukko or Tackett
