Can anyone recommend a good challenging 4 day solo hike in BC area? I am planning early and will probably go around April. I am sure there will be snow but I have snow shoes if needed.

Thanks in advance

How about the west coast trail on Van Island ?

Maybe I could do a day or two with ya depending when !!!!

If you're up for a bit of a drive, check out Wells Gray Provincial Park, in the interior (near Clearwater, about 120 km north of Kamloops). As far as I'm concerned, it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth - particularly Murtle Lake and the surrounding mountains.

There are plenty of multi-day hiking options. I recommend checking out the book "Exploring Wells Gray Park" by Roland Neave. Lots of great info on the area, including hike descriptions.

Here's the Well's Gray site: http://www.wellsgray.ca/
And the BC Parks site on Wells Gray: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/wells_gry/

I should note that, due to its remoteness and the weather, most of the park is closed until May - but keep it in mind anyway!

Other than that, I could spend a week wandering the trails that pitdog walks on every day, and I'm sure some of the folks from Vancouver will chime in with some good recommendations for that area.

All the best,

- Mike

I have a ton of places to check out. Thanks guys, I knew this would be the place to start.

Pit, does the island get snow in April? I know that might be a naive question but I am new to the area. Thanks

I was under the impression that you needed a special permit to do the
West Coast trail due to use limit restrictions. A friend of mine had to
wait for 2 years to be able to do that.

Is this still the case?

On another note:
+1 on the Wells Grey area

Yeah I'd forgot that you need a permit for the west coast trail !!!

Another good one on the Island is this one...

This was me doing part of it.....

Pit, Looks like a cool hike.

What is the snow situation around April?

It's had to say buddy, in that area snow is possible in April but I'd think it would be the exception rather than the norm.

That trail would be lethal covered in snow though !!!!

Snow in April? Not a chance=)

I live on Vancouver island. The area of Juan de Fuca rarely gets much snow even in the dead of winter because of the ocean.

In any case it is an awesome hike. I did it last summer and really enjoyed it. One hint for ya is that since your going in APRIL it will be VERY VERY wet. Be well prepared for rain:). Secondly id probably invest in a good hiking pole. There can be mud that can be as deep as your waist during that time of year:).

Hope that helps, if you got more questions, let me know

Holy Sacred cows, mud as deep as my waist.

I am going to do some research. I was just in MEC today and looked at some supplies.
I need this trip to get me through this semester.

Thanks

PO

if you need any supplies i can lend you some gear as well if you dont particularly wanna buy things. email me a list of gear you plan to take and i'll see if i can help with anything :)

JC, thanks I am still in the planning stages. I will get to you though at least for a double check on necessary site specific stuff.
