Hi Guys....
Thats right,, you heard correctly!
Ahhh ha.. Now that I got your attention..
Who likes Magnesium,,? Raise your hand!
I have a source for magnesium,, lots of it,, for free. So do you,, you just don't know it!
Ok heres what you need...
Adjustable wrench
Channel lock pliers
WD-40
Propane Torch
Good socket Set
Vise Grips
You won't need them all,, but maybe you will so bring them...
Go to your local heating and cooling dealer, and scope out some old hot water heaters. Ask the guy if he wouldn't mind letting you take the old anodes out of the heaters.
Ok you guessed it,, those anodes are pure magnesium! Usually they will let you scroung around out back and remove a few of the rods. Two of them will last you the rest of your life,,unless you play with it like I do... LMAO
If you heat one up with an Oxy/Ace torch,, it will ignite into the brightest thing you've ever seen, and burns for a good long time. One of these rods will burn for several hours, lighting up a Huge sized area...Just think of the possibilities!
Ok,, this is where you will find the rods...
Ontop of the heater you will find a square nut. The rod is attached to it. Some are easy to remove,,some aren't. Some have lots of magnesium,,others won't.. It's hit and miss,,, but when you come across a good one,, you've hit the jackpot!
The rod should be about .5" in diameter and have a white scale on it.. This is normal... If you find one that is very thin,,thinner than a pencil,,move to the next one...Sometimes all you find is the core,,and the core bTW is Titanium,,maybe you have a use for titanium rods...
Anyway,, this is why I have you bring a good set of tools.. You might have to heat it,,to get it off,,or use WD on it...
The effort is worth your time if you find a couple of good rods..
Another good source for magnesium is places that sell water well equip. They also use anodes for wells..Any old cast iron pool filter will also have one inside...
I use a Very rough wood rasp and with the rod clamped in a vise,, I rasp it down into small grains.. A file will work,,but a rasp is much faster...I've got a small peanut butter jar full of it,,with only an hour or so worth of work...
If you get some try firing it up with a torch,,, lots of fun,,but be careful,,it will destroy tools in a hurry!!
Any questions,,please ask!!
