4 folders for college

Hey man, I understand where you're coming from. You seem to have good taste in what you want to carry so you're cool in my book. I'll let the more expert folks give you good advice on the knives you want but the only advice I'll give is this: if you're gonna have nice stuff, don't have parties at your place. I've had way too many friends get their nice stuff stolen. So either find a way to properly secure it or just don't throw parties at your own place. Just my .02.

As for being a mall ninja, I was artillery for 5 years, thats kinda the opposite of mall ninja. Did I somehow give off the impression that I was going to carry all of these knives at once?

Sorry, you kinda did make it seem like you wanted to carry 4 different knives on campus at the same time. My bad.

So, if you're simply moving to a new location why not just bring your whole knife collection with you?

Here's what I took to college in 1987 ...
1) Slippie: Old Timer 33OT jack, and a Victorinox Explorer.
2) SD-oriented blade: Schrade LB7
3) Folding tank: See above
4) Knife lovers knife:  I loved them all.

Here's what I'd take to college If I could do it over, knowing what I know now ...
1) Slippie: Victorinox Ramber.
2) SD-oriented blade: None (just good old common sense).
3) Folding tank: One of the lower-end Leathermans (maybe a Kick).
4) Knife lovers knife: Case peanut, or maybe Swayback Jack.

Get what you realistically need, and then don't spend any more money on knives while you're in college. Save every spare penny and then spend it wisely on chicks and beer and cool road-trips. You'll have the rest of your life to buy crap. Study hard (not joking here), and have a ball!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

OOPS. I just read further down on page 1 that you're a 26 year old army veteran with a fiancee. So, scratch the beer and chicks recommendation. ;) But it seems you have an even bigger reason to be frugal. Hey, it's your money and I certainly don't know your financial situation. But I can tell you, as a 44-year-old who has been married going on 12 years, try to head into your marriage with more dollars than toys. Later on, when you two are settled, you can guy whatever floats your boat. Lastly, thanks for your service in the army!

Well I thought I explained it but here goes :)

I'm trying to change how I go about knife purchasing and what I spend my money on etc. I have a good collection of knives. Here on BF its nowhere near the nicest but for a time I was quite proud of it. The thing is that i spend alot of time on the go and working (work nightclub/concert security mainly) and at the gym and I move where I live every year or two. I have decided that I have way to many material possessions for the type of lifestyle I live. Aside from that I have well over 50 knives, many of which live in the safe of my best friend. The thing is that I no longer get any enjoyment out of the mere ownership of them, why do I have two manix 1's or two first run jungalas' in a safe? So I've decided I'm going to liquidate most of my collection and stick with a few knives that I will really enjoy and feel pride in the ownership and employment of. I have some customs and a few doziers and busses, Damascus sebenzas that i will keep a hold of but everything else is being gifted or sold. I can't really explain why I feel this way all of a sudden but I do. I have friends that do contracting and literally all of their earthly possesion can fit into their cars, they spend the money they arent saving for retirment on experiences and travel rather than objects and i think theres alot to it. as they all seem very happy. Some day when I have a centralized home and slow down I'll have a collection of just customs and a few william henry's and Chris reeve knives, but until then I want to get rid of most of my earthly possesions and just keep things that compliment my lifestyle.

@ Mnblade, its ok there's a lot of wisdom to your words, she makes more than me so i'm not to worried tho. We work well independently and spend long stretches of time separate. Its when I decide to have kids that it will be trouble.

@ sonny Good guess. Double majoring hopefully criminology and history. A police officer friend talked me into it even tho it will be a lot of work.

@ Bill Thanks for the suggestions the CASE is definatley going to be purchased soon, Probably a green sway back jack :)

Any one else have any suggestions?

God luck on your down sizeing, I'm trying to do the same thing and I'm a married 28 year old long past postgrad working as a lecturer, who's had 3 kids, :p

1) Slippie: Victorinox Cadet (although i think the Rambler was a greats suggestion or a buck 301)
2) SD-oriented blade: don't plan on using knives this way myself, but for my 2 cents ignore the big bad mean looking knives and get the thinnest, longest knife you can ( a stiletto?) read somewhere that all else aside they are the most deadly, but your a vet, so I'm guessing you kw a heck of a lot more about SD then a history and anthropology teacher :p
3) Folding tank: Benchmade 710 - i like the look of the zt's but have never ha one so I can't say
4) Knife lovers knife: I think bladechick probably gave the best answers so far ad I'd have to say her suggestion of a custom tis area is a good one. Other then that I might go for a "classic", sodbuster is good, buck 110, or even a delica, griptilian, leek or other flagship folder, not the "best" but the most edc'd and the ones people will probably be talking about for a long time to come, I think the homage to the "greats" in the spyderco sage knives could also fill this description maybe
