Just looking for feedback that is all. What would you choose? Steel is O1 with a Scandi grind.

3/32 or 1/8th thickness???

Thanks
Craig

Craig,
My preferance would be 1/8" but I tend to go a little over thick most of the time.

I'd rather the 3/32, but obviously it's all personal preference there. I just think they make for better slicers.

3/32" would be great for that blade. Would make it one slick cutter. I actually have a 5.5" blade in 3/32 O1 and that sucker takes some serious abuse. I've batonned the living daylights out of the thing with no ill effects. Just don't pry with it! That thickness should be fine for a puukko. 1/8 would be okay, but for a knife designed for cutting, like a puukko, 3/32 would do great.

I'd go with 3/32 myself. The plastic moras are thinner than that, and almost everyone seems to loves 'em.

i wouldnt fret too much over it. both will work well for the application. if you use 1/8'', maybe start the grind a little higher to compensate for the extra thickness.

I've found lately that 3/32 is great for users IMO. It is thin enough to not bind in cutting material while being thick enough to allow the knife to have a wedge section to it as well, and maintain some structural integrity (and not too painful of a thumb purchase on the blade). While I do like 1/16 for blade thickness I still find that I have to be careful not to put any side pressure on the blade for fear of snapping, which I do not have on any of my 3/32". I really have been graduating away to full spine 1/8" in EDC, now I just have to find my favourite thick steel for choppers (maybe 1/8"?).

I prefer 1/8. True, you will get a little more binding when you slice things, but a pukko with scandi excells at wood craft more than anything else. When I'm using a knife for that purpose I find myself often doing push cuts with my thumb on the spine for example during notching. The thicker spine really helps here for comfort.

I feel the true effectiveness of the scandi-grind decreases the thicker you go. I'd go with the 3/32.

In my own opinion; it doesn't matter as long as the grind is done at appropriate angles to result in a good cutting geometry.

I have a couple of 3.75" scandi blades in 1/8" thickness. 3/32" would work equally as well.

I think that as long as the blade has enough thickness to make the blade stiff, it should be fine.

I'm a bigger fan of 3/32 myself. I've got a little 3.5" convexed spear point I made recently out of O1 and have been using and abusing the hell out of with no troubles. It passed my most critical prying test, which is this: can it pry the top off a beer bottle? :D In real deal outdoor day to day situations, I just don't think anymore thickness is really necessary.

Only thing I hate about the 3/32" blade is that when using an oil quench, it was awfully unforgiving, and would warp in a heartbeat if I didn't have everything perfect.

I would go 3/32 if you have a different knife for hard use. Not that a 3 1/2 inch 3/32 wouldn't be pretty tough, but not a chopper.

I prefer 1/8 since(IMHO) it isn't too thick or thin. As long as the grinds are appropriate, either would work.
