4"-ish camping knife....

i see that...i'll watch when i get home, can't do the sound on my work computer lol

are the S1 and F1 very similar? if so, my buddy has an S1 i can prob get my hands on...but no one i know locally has/carries an RC4 to handle

Get the ESEE-4. You wont be disappointed. Excellent choice for camping/hiking. Warranty can't be beat either.
Stay away from the ontario.

Warranty does not help you in any way when you need to cut something :)
I prefer the f1 since it is better for my needs, ymmv

ESEE, Fallkniven and Ontario all make good, tough knives. Whichever one you buy, you can be sure it will serve you well. I have knives from all 3 manufacturers, and im very happy with all three.

I kinda like the big old Fallkniven A2m myself somewhere between a chopper and a camp knife. Bit bigger than a KA-BAR USMC fighter. Not your basic 4" camp knife but I sure like it.

The becker companion is 4''-ish right? I think it is in the $60-ish range. Looks like a pretty good hard use knife.

Someone also mentioned a mora, and rightly pointed out all the other stuff you could buy with the excess cash. I just bought a frost's 840 MG, so we will see how that turns out, but I got it because I wanted something simple and cheap and it gets excellent reviews. It was under $20 with shipping.

You could throw a ka-bar in between the becker and the esee/fallkniven. So you have mora--becker--ka-bar--esee/fallkniven in the price hierarchy.

Between the essee and the fallkniven, I think conventional wisdom would say that you should go with the non-stainless blade of the esee. Rown does the heat treat, and his heat treat on their 1095 has a very good reputation.

If I were you, I would try to find some cold hard facts about the fallkniven before I chose its stainless blade over the esee. There is an edge retention test done by one of the posters on here, and he found that fallkniven's more expensive stainless did pretty poorly in that department. That seems to confirm the suspision that despite the fact that fallkniven's stainless may be very good stainless, it is still stainless, and will generally still loose in most categories compared to a good carbon steel. I probably wouldn't go with stainless for what you describe unless I was REALLY concerned about corrosion and moisture (i.e. you are going to be using it constantly in a marine environment or something). You mention "rust," but that problem is usually greatly exaggerated ... especially since the esee's blade is coated and if you just keep it dry when not using it and put some oil on the edge, it will probably never rust.

I want to get the ESEE-4 but I have too many 4" knives already.

The F1 would be the best (personal bias) for the stainless and convex grind alone. The zytel sheath is surprisingly good for what it is and it will easily strap down onto a pack with some cord.

To HandofCod:

If you have too many then get a 5 to 7 inch knife.

CS SRK excellent sheath, KA-BAR utility same, KA-BAR Short Utility same, Cold Steel GI Tanto. Loads of good fixed blades out there in the 5.5 to 7" class. :)

To OP:

get the RC-4 NTnFy doesn't review the other one becasue it's not up to snuff IMHO. Ontario comparatives to the RC-3,4 is that they're shorter. Watch his tabletop videos again. He mentions it and they're not big knives to begin with. :)

so it looks like it's gonna be the Esee RC4, so now it's just choosing which handle i want to go with. I know i don't want G10..just don't care for it, but i'm not sure really the difference in the linen vs canvas micarta...anyone have any insight in that? And are the 2 different micarta's ONLY avaible with the "matching" color blades or can you order one differently (like black blade with canvas handles)

Correct. And thankfully, since ESEEs are as good quality as they are they'll never break under normal abuse. But if you happen to do something stupid, it's nice to have a warranty that will back you up.

What about a enzo or other scandi type knife?

Yeah I got some 6 and 7"ers as well, my point was more that the ESEE4 is a brilliant knife but I'd be very hard pressed to justifiy it given I've already got an F1 and two Barkies in that range.
