4 items.

In order of importance:
FFBM, but if hassle from City Police is likely then SAR3
small cooking pot (usually a MSR Alpine StowAway Pot or something in Titanium but a tin can from the trash works fine)
Wiggy's military type poncho and liner
Blast Match or Swedish Fire Steel (army model)

How could a flashlight make the top 4? We are not scared of the dark, we are what makes others afraid of the dark!

I do carry a canteen, a full set of heavy polypropylene or wool thermal insulated underwear, 550 cord, water filter, original Leatherman Supertool (saw and file really work), 9' or 12' "Noah's Tarp" and even a LED Mini-Mag flashlight in/with my day pack but this is way past 4 items.

Not a bad point... I just answered what was asked. I rarely leave the house for anything without a Nalgene of water with me.

I don't see the point of leatherman unless you are in an urban environment.
C2 with malkoff
LMF

I always have my SAK cybertool on me. I just can't think of a reason you would need a screwdriver. The corkscrew has come in handy more than once though:D

I do carry a leatherman at work and in my fire/ems gear.

Good questions
I like the
SarSquatch
Leatherman wave.
ZebraLight H31
3/8" X 4" Mischmetal from Going Gear
Some Patron tequila would go well with that.

1) Busse CGFBM
2) Leatherman Charge
3) Fenix PD30
4) Bruton Helios

I am amased how many of these lists are similar.

I used to walk across a mountain in western North Carolina all the time as a teen going back and forth from my house to a buddy's. Walking the road around was much farther . I never carried a flashlight , and that mountain was pitch black at night . I guess the devil was too scared to follow me.

1 - NMSFNO
2 - Leatherman Supertool
3 - Fenix TK20
4 - Going Gear Grizzly 1/2" x 6" (should last a while :D )

In Arcteryx Arro 22 Pack:
SAR 8
SAR 3 (two is one and one is none)
Guyot Stainless Bottle
Paracord 50ft

On Person:
Arcteryx Theta AR Jacket
Icebreaker 320 Zip Mock-T Sweater
Other things
BIC in pocket

1) FFBM - overkill, won't fail, acts like an ax/knife, can perform most functions of a small blade

2) Leatherman Charge TI - The needle-nose pliers have tons of uses, and the blades/tools beat swiss army IMO for quality.

3) Hand-crank flashlight- i like my 360 lumen LED torch, but it eats through batteries on high-output, useless if batteries die. I would prefer both if possible. I guess my rationale is that if you are far enough from the campfire to need a light, batteries may be a limiting factor.

4)ESEE firestarter with compass

Cool thread. Here's my pick.

SFNO
Schrade tough tool
Nitecore
Strikeforce

For a day or a month:

1) Stainless Steel water bottle
2) BOSS Street
3) 8x10 Silnylon tarp w/tieouts
4) Ferro rod (3/8x4")

Air, shelter and water are covered.
Got 3 weeks to figure out food.

This is with boreal rainforest in mind.
In a desert I'd sub the ferro rod and tarp for a space blanket and a 6 liter camelbak bladder.
