A few shots of my most reliable and enthusiastic hiking companion, Ruby. She's a yellow lab, and she likes nothing more than hitting the trails (or forging new ones while I'm snowshoeing in the winter).

Great to see some other canine companions!

Why does her paws look bloody in this picture? :(

Alas, she suffers from allergies in the summer. Her paws aren't bloody - but they do swell up and bother her a bit. I have used a variety of treatments, ranging from ointments to - when things are really rough - benadryl. Her preferred solution is to play around in the water or mud. Can't argue with that.

Her allergies subside in the fall and return in late spring.

For a dog that's over a decade old, I think I'm lucky to be able to say that the allergies are the only medical problem that she has ever had.

All the best,

I love these threads and am totally jealous. I lost my german shephard/ hiking buddy two years ago and havent replaced him yet. Thanks folks.

Awesome pics guys. I just had a baby girl, but I do want to get us a German Shepherd.

Did ya know that they call Staffordshire bull terriers ' Nanny dogs' because of how good they are with young children ! Maisy, the dog covered in mud on my post, will instantly become motherly and protective to any kids that come to our house. They often fall asleep laid on her !!!!:D

We live in north GA and spend a lot of time in the woods there and back home in WV. Here are the guys (and gal) that walk the trails with me.

Ladd at home

We usually go one at a time, but if my wife comes along then we can take three or all four of them. All are great hikers and campers. Wouldn't dream of going out without one or the other of them. Molly and Ladd are training for SAR and cadaver searches. Riley takes care of my wife and Murphy has a full-time job baby-sitting me. Everybody but Murphy has Obedience School diplomas and all but Riley have some protection training as well as tracking. All 4 of them are good with spoken directions when we're hiking (left, right, upstairs, downstairs, etc.)
