4-Max Curiosity

You can probably find a Hinderer on the exchange for near your budget if that floats your boat at all.
Eh , Hinderers do nothing for me. And I don't like flippers. $400 is my preferred cap. But I'd have no problem going up to $500 or $600 should I come across a large , beefy , non-flipper folder that I really like.

I wish the Subvert would get released already.

I’m shocked this knife doesn’t get more attention. Build quality is just amazing.

I've always felt if you're going to go for a massive overbuilt knife, you're buying it so everything is exactly that "overbuilt". I just don't see the point in buying a folder with huge stock, heavy in pocket etc but it still has a frame lock. That spring tension barely gets any stronger when you beef up the frame of the knife. That's why if i'm going to put up with the weight and size I want the thing to be as indestructible as it feels even if we're talking "abnormal or abuse standards". In that vein i prefer the 4max, SR1 and the actual AD-10 customs from Demko. I still love the Adamas and other tanky knives tho.

When other companies start bringing out massive overbuilt knives with actual strong (and unique?) overbuilt locks that can't fail from average abuse I will start looking at other makers. Because at the end of the day overbuilt knives are a bit of a novelty, they don't cut things better or carry better, they're made to give you that sense of strength and indestructibility, and I just don't get that feeling from any kind of frame lock.

Definitely check out the Benchmade Adamas if you haven't already.

I've never rolled the dice on a 4-MAX, although I'd like to handle one. I've owned a Satu and wound up selling it; i like everything about the Adamas better.

The Adamas does look nice. That may be the ticket.

I had an Adamas and it is definitely a beefy blade and chunky handle. It would have needed some serious re-profiling to work as a cutting tool though. I still have a CS SR1 (the original clip pt version) - it cut ok for a thick blade, and will not need as much behind-the-edge thinning to turn it into a knife (as opposed to folding prybar) :) Not a BM thing - I also have 2 contegos - not in the same beefy class as the OP seeks, but much much better cutters than the Adamas. My personal preference: if I have to choose between axis and tri-ad, I chose tri-ad.

Yes, you can take the clip off the Max. You take out the screws on the off side, slide the clip and long posts off the knife, slide the clip off the posts, then put the posts back through the handle and put the screws back in.

PMP is a swiss company, the knives are made by Maxace. A couple of people have one and built quality seems to be good.
@austonh / epicsnugglebunny has one, he is moving though, so he might not reply soon. He has a video up on his YT channel though. Maybe that helps.

Nice , thanks. At $250 , seems like a steal. This PMP Beast and BM Adamas look to be in the lead. Prob gonna order tomorrow or Wed.

Between the two I would go with the beast since it is discontinued and the Adamas isn't so the beast is getting scarce. Even if it isn't a great cutting tool or EDC it is gonna put a grin on your face.
My two cents.

This one's not so great.

Here's my 2 cents. Number one I have a Cold Steel 4-MAX Italian made and it's a fine knife. No issues what so ever so I'd guess to say if you bought a new one you would be satisfied with it. I can definitely say they're a tank of a knife. Secondly, between the Adamas and Beast I'd definitely go with the Adamas because of the Axis locking mechanism. It's definitely more secure than any liner or frame lock in my opinion and you can't beat Benchmade's warranty service if the knife ever needed any kind of repair.

Obviously not my money, but I would take a chance on the 4 Max. For one, I don't think it is really much of a risk. I've had a few 4 Max models and both were flawless; they were on par with my custom AD10. I didn't keep the 4 Maxes because of the size and weight, but I have no doubt they are the strongest folders made, and they still cut well for their size. I suspect if you don't scratch the itch for one you will keep wanting one.
