I'm a new forumite but a knifemaker for almost 40 years. I was for a time a Knifemakers Guild member, having studied under Rod Chappel and sponsored into the guild by George Herron, Dick Gillenwater and D Holder. I retired several years ago when heart problems and lack of supply of the above mentioned forced me into it. I'm feeling better now and would like to get back into the shop and make some more knives but I can't find any 4" X 72" belts at any of the knifemaker supply houses. Can anyone help?

Besides places like ebay or amazon where they're readily available .. you can try places like Direct Abrasives USA or Fintech Abrasives.

Why not 2x72 belts? I have a 4x36 belt grinder and wish whenever i use it that it had 2 inch belts. I can hardly ever get a even grind on my thicker knives, compared to using my friends grinder (2x42) and getting way better results.

I hate to break it to ya but neither Direct Abrasives or Finteck Abrasives carries 4" X 72' belts. Do you think I've not ever searched the web before?I have no desire to go to 2" wide belts. It takes forever to rough in a blade with one of those + I have a 3HP 3 phase square wheel grinder that'll rough in 30 or more blades an hour. Why would I change to a system that drops my productivity by two thirds?

Call Scott at TruGrit. They can have pretty much anything custom made for you.

I'm not sure why you hate to break it to me, cause I'm not the looking for the belts, you are. I was trying to offer you some places to LOOK .. so there was no need to make that rude remark. Good luck with your search.

Well OK then. Welcome!

If someone responded to me like that in real life after I tried to help them I'd pop them right in the... Okay... maybe not, but I probably would spin on my heel and not talk to them again. :p

Anyway, you took the time to sign up, you should stick around and participate. Forums can have their own sort of learning curve, but I've met very few people here that I wouldn't want to share a coffee with in person.

Welcome to BF. :)

I think we should cut Bootstrap Bill some slack, after 40 years, a bad ticker and a difficult road to recovery, the man obviously doesn't have time to debate the virtues of a 4x72 vs 2x72 with some young whipper snapper...he just needs the goods ;0)

I'm not a young whipper snapper .. nor was I debating. His response to me was uncalled for and nothing more. Coming onto this forum and asking for advice where one can find a 72" belt after 40 yrs of knife making - no matter what the width - would make me think he does not know how to use a search engine. Most industrial manufactures will produce whatever size custom belt you desire if you're willing to pay for it.

Have a blessed day.

Depending on how old you are, you might very well be a Whipper Snapper in Bootstrap Bill's eyes LOL

Besides I believe the budding debate over 2 vs 4 was started by GaryPogueCustomKnife, Bootstrap Bill simply leveled his scattergun in order to kill two birds with one stone ;0)

I feel the need to apologize for my rude comment last night. I have no excuse and will try to be more civil in the future. And thanks for all the attempts at helping me.
