I am looking for a good defensive round and a good plinking round for my new .40 caliber Glock 23 and .45 Kimber Custom II LAPD SWAT, I am thinking about .40 155gr Winchester Rangers and for the .45, 230gr Goldensabers.

But for just range shooting, wolf, PMC? What have you guys had luck with?

There is a plethora of good quality defensive ammo on the market for those calibers.. Those you have chosen should be just fine.

As far as plinking, that will be a bit harder simply because prices have risen so much recently.

I usually shoot Winchester White Box in .40 when I'm not serious or shooting reloads. I haven't shot .45 in a long time, but S&B was my choice a couple of years ago.

I prefer the S & B ammo for my .45 (Sig P220R). As far as defensive rounds, I have some
Cor-bon DPX... Your Rangers and Golden Sabers should do a fine job...

There seems to be different qualities of Wolf brand. The cheapest stuff is made with steel casings. Theoretically, it isn't supposed to harm your gun, but it seems like it would be harder on it than brass.

Anyone know for sure?

I do know the cheap Wolf is some dirty dirty ammo, probably the dirtiest I've ever shot, although I hear Winchester white box is pretty dirty as well.

I still like S&B.

i have often heard this as well, but have never put it to the test.

It's hard to find a bad 40 load except the reduced recoil type .For practice I use WWB.For serious work I have some Corbon DPX [$$] but also use others .I like the 155 grain weight.I've used the 40 for at least 15 years and find it an excellent round and don't see any difference in performance from the 45.

its hard to go wrong with w-w ranger, speer gold dot or remington golden sabre in any calibre.

i've always liked the heavier bullets in .40 & .45 ie 180gr and 230gr.

also prefer std pressure loadings in the .40 & .45, no +p or +P+.

also make sure whatever ya choose works in your pistol and is accurate enuff ie do some test firing.

i know so many folks who buy this hot load or that hot load, load up there pistol and never test fire, not a good idea imho.

For practice Black Hills re-manufactured, it is fairly cheap and shoot very well.

For carry there simply isn't a better round than the CorBon DPX. I have shot it through 16 gauge steel and still gotten reliable penetration and expansion.

here are some of the test results with the 185 grain 45 DPX

BTW there is no such thing as a +P load for the 40 !! Any claim to be is pure BS !

I dont have any good ammo dealers anywhere near me so i was going to order online, any reccomendations for dealers?

Speer Gold Dot for a defensive round and Winchester for the range.

I actually think after doing some reading the 165gr and 230gr Federal HST ammo are the way to go defensively

For 45acp, reload and order in bulk from Georgia Arms. I also am always looking for good deals. For defense I carry 230g Hyrdashoks or 185g XTP's or Golden Sabers.

Sure there is...It's called the 10mm.:D.

I like the good old Federal JHP in both the .40 and the .45 ACP.

I ordered 200rds each of Federal HST in 165gr and 230gr respectively, I kept reading good things and they come in boxes of 50 which is a plus. and for $22 or so a box they wernt too bad price wise

ammo prices have gone through the roof in the last couple years.

try cheaperthandirt.com or cabelas.com

cabelas isn't always the most competitive price wise, but they typically have a better selection than most.
