For the range, I go with the CCI Blazer non reloadable aluminum case ammo in 230G ball for the 45ACP- reliable, clean, and at a fair price. Shipping costs may be lower due to much less overall weight per case! The scrap aluminum can be turned in for a few $. 
For hostiles, the Federal 230G HydraShoks have never failed for me. Just remember, the 3 most important factors for choosing the right ammo for your particular sidearm is reliability, reliability, reliability. It must go bang every time! Otherwise all other following factors don' t mean much.
Testing various loads of different brands is costly. But you do really need to run a few boxes of each potential brand/ load thru your firearm before loading up for business.
