40 lb Draw enough for Whitetails?

#40 will be just fine if its legal!
I killed an elk with a #50 bow and it worked just fine...they're ALOT bigger than whitetails.
I've been shooting traditional for a long time, although I did stray from the path with a compound for about 3 years. I gave it up because it just wasn't fun for ME anymore. All my buddies shoot compound and I don't look down on them for it. But, I have converted a few to get a stickbow just for shooting carp and such...I'm slowly going to get them converted!!!!!!

theres a feller up here in BC that does very well with a 24# Kings Pawn recurve , with easton shafts and well sharpened and very well placed cutter heads.

North Dakota requires 35# draw wgt for hunting. Get the bow tuned in with the arrows and try and get the arrow wgt to at least 9-10 grains per draw wgt. Exmaple, if you are hunting with 35#s the arrow should weigh in at 315-to 350 grains. Like others have said, shot placement is key to making a quick kill. Happy hunting.
