No, not really. Here's why:

1. you work your hiney off all day long, or have done so already for 40 years, and dagnab deserve a nice knife if you want one.

2. you get a pretty good feeling from having a nice knife, gun, multi-tool, flashlight or whatever in your pocket; good feelings aren't so easy to come by these days.

3. some $400 folders actually perform better than $40 folders. And even if they don't, you can still use them to cut, slice, chop and pry, or even stick one in some a-hole's neck if you have to.

4. life is too short not to carry a nice knife; in 5 years or or 39 years, you're going to be worm food and no one will know or care that you dropped 4 bills on a knife way back when.

Moral of the story: if you want a nice knife, save up your $20s in a cookie jar and get yourself a nice dang Sebenza, Strider or whatever.

cheers!

Well said.

Now if my wife were to say that, replacing "knife" with "purse", I'd have to point out that that was a bunch of incoherent nonsense.

Yeah, but a purse won't outlive you like a Strider will.

Edited: not that it matters. :)

cheers

It could be that you are on to something. What is $400 in a life time?

My problem is I like to have two of everything in case the first one is lost or busted.

I guess that means $800.

Really, I was/am looking closely at a Sebenza.

:)

I am not a big fan of folders, but I plan on spending over $400 soon on a fixed blade. It will be used, of course- as all my knives get used.

Life is too short to worry about spending a little cash. (or a lot)

For some of the work that goes into a $400 folder they are a great deal, IMHO. And they usually hold their money or go up in value.

The FBM, of course. ;) I am assuming it will be $400+ of course then I will have to go and spend another $100+ on a sheath, but it will be worth it. (of course "soon" is a relative term)

My motto is: Work hard and buy what you want.

If someone would rather buy 4 different $100 knives, so be it. I have been there. But if you'd rather buy 1 higher-end knife, you shouldn't feel shame in spending that much on a knife. Not at all.

At this point, I get more joy spending $400 on a Sebenza or $500 on a Strider than I do spending that much on several Spydercos, Benchmades, Bucks, Kershaws etc...

That doesn't mean I don't buy those brands anymore. My next knife is going to be a Spec Bump. But it means I buy what strikes my fancy, be it $100 or $1000. Life is too short to be lazy and pinch pennies.

Edit: Just to be clear, I am not saying everyone should spend all of their money and not save any. I think people should live within their means, and that includes saving up some money in case something unexpected happens. But beyond saving some money to play it safe and plan for the future, I believe in buying what you want and being happy even if that means working some extra hours, getting another job, or getting a harder job that pays more. I am of the "work more hours and making your little time off really count" school rather than having more time off but less money to make that time off be really enjoyable. I have lived both and I prefer working more and buying what I want without having to wait and wait. I believe in splurging on some good food or a nice knife, even if it means tightening your belt next week. I believe in working more hours so that you can splurge more often.

Many people spend $200 on nice sunglasses and aren't even "sunglass nuts". So what's the big deal spending 400 on a folder if you're a knife nut? And I do feel you get what you pay for. Usually. Just knowing my SNG's on me (it always is) puts me in a better mood. Money well spent.

I had Oakley Juliettes for about 5 years, and they were recently stolen. I replaced them immediately, and feel that I certainly got my money's worth wearing them as much as I did when I had them. My only regret was babying them so much. Buy nice stuff, and use it like it were cheap. It's well worth it.

Only rich people can afford cheap stuff. I personally believe in buying good stuff that I can rely o not to crap out on me. OTOH, in many cases, with a bit of research and shopping around, you can find stuff that gives you 90-95% of the top-of-the-line ubermodel, for 50% of the price. If that extra 5-10% isn't going to be critical to your needs, of course...

Right. What's the point of earning / saving money, if not spending? Money you don't spend is money you don't have. ;)
Maybe, a bit too extreme? I also say, you live within your means, and save what you can, but at the same time, buy / enjoy what you want / like within your reach. You deserve that. Enjoy the life. Everyone has different purview. I enjoy my knife of $400, when you enjoy your $400 dress / purse / whatever.

I can't convince myself to spend $400 on a knife. But I will buy eight $50 knives over the course of several months.

For $400 I can take a pretty nice vacation if I drive about 10 hours away from here.

I like vacations. :D

I can take a great vacation every single day just by walking over to my dresser drawer and pulling out my SMF. And it is a vacation I can take with me to work :P

I take that same vacation with my Gunhammer, its always a party with my GH:thumbup:. But yeah I agree I work hard for my money and if I want a 400 dollar knife or 700 dollar knife or 20 dollar knife I'll darn well have it.

Ehh, maybe. When knives start to cost as much as firearms, even low end ones I start to wonder, but I'm guilty of breaking the limit a few times.
