Which would you be more likely to spend $400 on?

I wouldn't spend $400 on any of the poll options. I would spend that much on a well-made USA produced knife (i.e., CRK Mnaldi)) though.

I clicked "new or unknown custom makers custom", but that needs to be stretched .... CPK is not new anymore; if I can control myself, my next knife will be the pre-ordered (and half paid) CPK Shiv that should come in the next couple of months.

But I'm guessing you were not thinking of fixed blades ?

$400 for a knife is way out of my budget and comfort zone. (it would also take me several months to save that much up - even if I bought nothing else.)
There are a lot of things I need more than a $400 knife ... most of which sell for far under that amount. I am therefore more likely to buy the something elses, than even think about a $70~$80 plus knife. 😁

Fifth option. Tuck away my $400 and forget about it, then get a spot in line with a maker. When the time comes, I'd be excited to cough up a couple hundred more to get 'er done.

agreed, i think my current and only custom which is pre-owned was a smidge more than that and theres practically no chance of buying from that maker as a custom order at this point i believe.

I answered “wouldn’t spend $400 on any knife”. I don’t think there's a knife in the world worth that much to me.

A hypothetical example of where I might answer “new or unknown maker’s custom” could be if I knew someone starting out or struggling who needed a boost. The $400 wouldn’t really be for the knife in that case, though.

I don't relish ever spending that much on a knife (even though I have a Randall on order...), but rather than voting that I wouldn't, I chose "new or unknown maker's custom."

Additionally, if it were a blade of some historic significance - I'd consider ponying up the cash. General Washington's Steel-Hilted Smallsword for $400? You bet! Genghis Khan's Turko-Mongol Saber? Sure, I guess. Tutankhamen's space dagger? Quit twisting my arm...

I'll be honest... This thread is humbling. I would've swore that most here owned at least one custom costing hundreds if not thousands of dollars. I can't afford that and even getting a GEC from a dealer for over $100 is often more than I probably should spend. It's kind of nice to see that I'm not alone in finding it difficult to spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on a tool such as a knife, when in reality you can get similar functionality much cheaper (granted it won't have the same workmanship and overall quality as a higher end knife).

I selected a new or unknown makers custom because if I ever managed to get $400 to spend on a knife, it would certainly be a custom and likely be a purchase to "cap off" my collection and signify that I don't really NEED any more knives. A holy grail of sorts. That being said... I'd probably still find it hard not to pick up a good knife at a good price 😅

If I had 400 to spend it wouldnt go towards a knife... It would go towards equipment to make my own. I'm sure I could come up with a decent belt sander and drill press with some searching. They would also be useful tools to have for many projects, not just making my own knives. I'd like to be able to make blades instead of hafting or modifying existing ones.
