Hey Guy's, I've got a bunch of .050'' 410ss and was thinking of useing it for some liner lock's. Is this advisable ? should they be heat treated? and if so is there an easy way to HT. or should i just send them with my blades to HT.Thanks a bunch, you guy's rock. Chad

Went back and reread the original post. Arthur is correct use titanium. 410 stainless will not work for the lock side. It willl polish and allow the lock to slip and not stay locked. Bad deal. Mike

I am not sure about 410 but you need to be sure you can heat treat. The spring of the lock liner needs to be HT to keep shape. Some stainless can be treated to the proper hardness (spring steel) and some may not. I used some 440 for a liner and it worked fine, but I did heat treat to get spring effect.

I have used it in the past and have seen others use it as well. I did heat treat, just by bringing up to temp and then air cooling. Seems to work just fine, have several knives that have been used extensively with no problems. You do want to make sure the lock tab is long enough to form a nice gradual bend though.

I've played with titatnium a little bit as well, and while its a little bit harder to cut, I haven't found it to be that much worse than the stainless was to work with. I'll probably stick with it in the future just to avoid the hassle of heat treating and the necessary clean up afterwards.

Thanks again guy's. I've got a 12''x24'' piece of this that was sent by accident when I ordered some folder part's some time ago. They ended up not charging me for it and said to keep it.So if it will work Iwanted to use it on some knives for Christmas gift's. I think i'll give it a try.chad
