I've done a little research to see what kinds of things (edged implements) can be produced from 4140.

It seems it is used for hi-speed drill bits and axe heads.

Any good for knives at all? Is this a stainless steel?

Thanks!

Andy

I do know that it is not stainless.

Other than that, hopefully someone else will chime in.

This is the "chrome moly' steel of firearms and numerous other uses .A fine steel but definitely not stainless . Best for hammers ,'hawks, and anvils.

It makes great gun parts but doesnt have enough carbon to hold the best edge fore knives. I use it on guards and pommels because it takes a nice mirror finish and blues terrific.

Andy can you get it in 1/2" thick bar stock? I would be interested in some.

I don't know, I'll ask and let you know. The company produces it for the oil business.

The fellow I know who can get it for me is changing careers soon, so we'll have to act fast!
